I dont think names should be a problem unless their really out there for the race's they play. I doubt i would see a gnome name Drizzt, though the name is really well known and not common so i wouldnt expect to see it at all. i got put off because when i first started my Druid knew of Drizzt sense he from the spine of the world and well... ya... posible run in.

As far vader would go, for what he is and does, i think it passable as a first name. Not like he running around go "The force is strong with in this one" or trying to 'Choke' people with the force.

I sometimes use famous names but they are almost always not from D&D and almost always only 1 name. Like say using the first name but a different last name.

I don't see a problem with people even using names like Elminster or whatnot as long as they are RPing they are not the real one. You know why I don't see a problem?

When parents hear a cool name they tend to copy it when they have a child it's how unique names can spread. In the D&D word if I was a parent and I aspired to have my child become a famous well-known wizard I may give him the name Elminster in a sort of honour to the real thing.

the key thing would be the player needs to RP he/she is not the real one and would also have to put up with in-game comments relating to the similarity in the name.

This thread has been brought out of context.. As said in the original post, I don't mind either when a familiar name pops up here and there and the character is actually something different and roleplayed well. It just becomes an annoyance when too many people adopt a 'famous' name. So the request was to please take that into consideration when making a new character, so that we won't have a quarter or more of the community walking around as celebrities in the long run.

I think it's fine, if the DMs don't tell you anything, I think they can play and RP like that NPCs. Just they must adapt to the enviroment, I did it once playing Keldorn Firecam :P.

Well, I can't comment on the frequency of such names seeing as how I haven't been online yet.. however! I can't help putting in my two cents...

And I agree with Kaeldorn, it just feels like laziness to me. Of course, hundreds of names have been used in literature, movies, games etc so it's nigh impossible to steer COMPLETELY clear of it. But no one is asking for that. I was once on a server where they wouldn't let players name their character "Brunhilde" because it was the name given to one of Odin's valkyries. Erm.. I live in Scandinavia, those names used in old myths/religious beliefs are real names still used today - even names of gods like Thor are recycled into Torsten, Torbjörn (which are considered extremely geeky names, btw). My point being, if it goes too far, it becomes ridiculous too.

Still, there's no reason why we can't find a name that really suits the character we want to play. If you name a character Sarevok, for example, I think that's always going to colour the way you RP. If we're already creative enough to come up with a psyche, past and consciousness for a character, why not the name, too?

I was once asked if I am a Card Captor Sakura fan because of my name.

I had heard of the anime before, but knew nothing about it. Apparently, there is something called the "Clow" and they are wizards, cards, or wizard cards or whatever.

I thought it was rather funny, especially the individual's determination to describe the show to me.

Well...I dont really pay mind to peoples names and whatnot most of the time. Seeing how any name you pick there will problably a chance of someone else already useing it so dont think your original unless yourname is a bunch of random letters. So you would have to be a drow to make any sense.

Aw come on, don't tell me you wouldn't raise an eyebrow if you ran into a Gandalf or a Sephiroth. You have to agree there is a difference between naming a character "Bob" and naming him "Macbeth." (I remember coming across a "MegaGandalf" on the English RP sever for LotRO. Hehe still makes me chuckle.)

After reading this thread I completely agree. I actually for some reason have a hard time coming up with names for characters some times. For that reason and the way I wanted to play my wizard is the reason I chose the name Raistlin. Though after reading this I have since removed that character on my own. Though I have since made a new wizard to replace. Love those wizards!

Poor Bane, I just booted him from the server for being afk in the exigo 4ever!

No offense, but the server was full, people wanted in, and you weren't in the afk area *shrugs* lol.

I think "Raistlin" is a ok name, and "Majere" is acceptable to. But "Raistlin Majere" is a but too specific.

Just like "Drizzt" is cool, and so is "Do'urden" But "Drizzt Do'urden" is obviously not an original name.
