  • Druids and sensing shapeshifting

I've done a search both here and on "teh interwebz", and I'm almost sure it was asked before, but I found nothing definititve.

I've been wondering this, and unsure how to go about it so for now I've ignored shapeshifted Druids or treated them as if Annie was just seeing an animal, when they are near.

Would a Druid be quicker than others to catch on that the creature they are looking at is, in fact, shapeshifted? Or do they just see another animal like anybody else would who is not as attuned to nature?

Not to open up another can of worms in the form of a discussion on ploymorph. This is specifically about Wildshape and its variants.

No, druids have no special powers to sense wildshapes. They have all the tools everyone else has (survival checks, common sense, detect magic, etc), but gain no druid only bonuses.

And before anyone offers their opinion.. if D&D wanted druids to be able to sense other druids.. they would have given them a feat to do so. They didn't and so neither shall we.

Funny how this comes up the second I hit level five and get the ability to shapeshift.

But I am glad it did... it will probably help me with more realistic RP with mine and other shapeshifted druids.

Of course for a given value of "real".

We ARE talking about a universe made up by hundreds of nerds with way too much time on their hands set in a land made up by several other nerds with too much time on their hands.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you... I would probably be creating persistent worlds myself if I didnt have a bad case of ADD.

Pardon the double post, but I would rather this than make another topic about the same thing...

Would a druid be able to TALK while shapeshifted? I know the one in NWN 2 campaign seemed to speak common in the maidens glade... but that might have been a plot element.

Would they instead... only be able to talk in druidic? Or animal grunts only a druid would understand? Or would it depend solely on the skill of the shapeshifter in question?

Druids aren't allowed to talk when shifted going by the book, unless the form can normally talk. Translating that to NWN 2, only treant and elemental forms (maybe some of the epic shapes, but those are worthless and have ridiculous requirements, and no one is epic here anyways) should let a druid talk while shifted, since those creatures can normally speak other languages. However also going by the book, druids can communicate normally with other animals of the same type, IE bear shape lets you communicate with other bears.

As for sensing other druids I don't think they should be able to. Druids seem to be meant to be undetectable and able to blend in seamlessly to a natural environment, unless they want to be detected. True sight is really it.

Dark has it prety much nailed down.
A druid cannot speak in ANY language (including druidic) while wildshape with the following exceptions:
1.) The wildshape has the ability to speak languages normally.
2.) The druid may speak animal speak to other animals of the same shape he is currently possessing (badger to badger, bear to bear)
3.) He possess the Shifter Speach feat. (Gained at 1st level MOMF.)
4.) If he is in an animal form, he can speak animal speach to another intelligent creature that knows the language (other druids, gnomes, etc.)

Thats it. Natural Spell does not allow you to speak, before anyone asks. (Techniclly what it does is allow you to cast a druid spell without verbal or somantic requirements)

              ================================================== ===

Ok, thats the offical line. The realistic line is this: If everyone you are RPing with is fine with you speaking, do whatever you want. But if someone has issue with it, fall back to this.

Final Note: You do not gain ESP, and psychic communication by becoming and illithid or an umber hulk. (though Shifter Speach will allow those forms to make sounds equivalent to speaking)
If you try it on someone, and they get pissy or unhappy, back off and fall back to the official line of rules immediately.

Nice, that's pretty much all other questions I might have come up with this early in the day. Can we add this to Wiki/FAQ or wherever else it would be appropriate, for future reference?
