This is the pre release announcement of the Samurai base class.
please review all rules and requirements of the class on the wiki as they have been altered recently to meet Sundren's requirements. We have added Samurai armor and weapons to the server as well, to compliment the class.

Known Bug: As of this time, you cannot take the Samurai class at character creation. When Obsidian releases a fix this will work properly. Until then you can only take this class at 2nd level or beyond.

Known Change: Kiai Smite is in no way the same thing as a standard smite and should not be reported as a bug.

Notice to players: The DM's will be actively watching your performance with this class. If you are not RPing as a Samurai, they will consider you Ronin, and adjust your PC appropriately without warning.

Do samurai also get perfect two weapon fighting for free?

The songs have absolutely nothing to do with the characters. But they are awesome songs.

I've read the wiki (by the way it doesn't have a link for them, i had to type it in manually) and it confuses me. it says they get normal at 2nd, improved at 10th and greater at 16th, which would lead me to believe they would receive perfect sometime in the epic levels, hence my confusion. so do they or don't they?

nope. PNP doesn't give it to them they don't get it. now you can still get it as a normal feat if you meet the pre requisites

Mechanically, the Samurai class sucks goat balls for pocket change. How about a boost to those lucky lasses/lads that get the chance to play the awesomeness that a true Samurai is?

Like something that makes them very hard to kill, an improved form of Die Hard? Like death first accurs when you reach -10 + charisma modifier hit points?

              Or something, not my department.

              Just a thought.

I actually went back and put in the Staredown feat correctly.
At level 14, the samurai changes from being a support character and back up sword to being a monster. He gets a persistent aura that "can and most likely will"give all enemies within 30' of him a -2 to AB, -2 to saves, and -2 skills.
That and the fact that there are katanas and samurai armor for sale on the server in a store only samurai can access, and every last one of those items has Restriction: Lawful and Restriction: Samurai on them, anyone else will need a 16+ in UMD to equip them.

                Comparing the two:
The Samurai gains 13 extra feats over his 20 levels (not counting feats at level 3,6,9 etc) The samurai's fighting style is pretty specific to make best use of his abilities. (Two weapon fighting)
The Samurai at level 20 can attack 7 times per roud (normally).

The Fighter gains 11 extra feats over his 20 levels (not counting feats at level 3,6,9 etc) and can use shields. The fighters feat selection is varied as well as his choice of fighting styles.
The fighter at level 20 can attack (normally) with 4 attacks per round.

At first I agreed, I thought the samurai was too weak, but after last nights event with omnigalas, and looking thru the combat logs, I changed my mind.

I must admit, even though I am an expert 3.5 optimizer, I have very little experience with neverwinter 2, I just instinctively gasp in horror when people wan to use that class.

Still thinking about what to make as my second chracter (if I actually make one at all). A Thayan Knight sounded tempting, but now so does the samurai. Not just for capability battle-wise, but also because I bet I could make an interesting story around one.

I personally love the idea of needing to choose someone to swear loyalty to. Playing a devoted servant has more rp potential than many people realize. Hell, maybe I'll get Narse on board to this as well. Anyone want a pair of loyal samurai bodyguards/servants? lol

Remember, there is the option for choosing a master of choosing a PC who is level 10 + as a master (though it goes without saying you cannot choose one of your alts)

Just keep in mind, especially with PCs, if you willingly disobey your master.. your not samurai any more. All it takes is ONE time and poof. All your Cha based feats for the class go away.

So if you do choose a PC, your putting your faith into them that they will not make you do something you will refuse to do.

Though generally, bushido would demand that in a case extreme enough that you'd consider disobedience, you'd most likely commit suicide in an attempt to help your lord see the intensity of your disagreement, making the whole loss of charisma-based feats a minor concern at best.

I know Master Pentec would willingly accept a samurai bodyguard,(or 2) and would craft him, (and his friend) some fine armor/weapons to swear loyalty to him. Would be a fun bit of RP .

He is a master Evoker, lawful neutral align, and would treat his soldiers well, as opposed to the reds.
