  • A Question About Domains...

I've been reading this thread: http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=5147

I've noticed that in some cases domains that best fit the deity, but aren't available in NWN2, have been allowed. My question is:

Is it ok to select a domain that you can reasonably justify as a replacement for a domain not available in NWN2 that your deity would otherwise allow?

    For example,
Time domain could replace the fate domain,
Fury domain could replace the wrath domain,
Death domain could replace the repose domain,
Healing domain could replace the renewal domain,
Travel domain could replace the portal domain, et cetera.

Apologies if this has already been answered. I did a search for it before posting and found nothing that covered it fully.

If there are two domains allowable in NWN2 then use those. If not, make a quick post to the help forum just to check about the ones you're planning to use instead.

Alright, but it's worth noting that some deities, such as Jergal, simply don't have two domains available in NWN2. In the thread mentioned above it suggests the death domain, but that domain's special ability is an undead summon (negative plane avatar). Aside from the fact that the ability is bugged until cleric level 8, it also makes no sense for a character who opposes the creation of unlife to have a the special ability to summon the spectral living dead. It's also worth noting that NWN2's version of the death domain is nothing like that of the P&P version.

I suppose the ideal solution would be to customise the domains and rework what Obsidian failed to create, but that'd take some time.

As I said, if there aren't enough domains feel free to post in the help forum with your proposed ones! If there are one or zero possible domains listed then ask and we'll figure it out with you! Now... on to Jergalism!

Since when is Jergal completely opposed to the undead? From the FR wiki...

"In ethos, Jergal is colder and more inhumane than his master [Kelemvor], sanctioning the use and creation of undead by his followers, provided they serve the cause of advancing death in the world. He is not evil or malicious, but impassively records the death of all things."

Addtionally, some of the scribes used by the Jergalite church become undead to continue their duties in keeping registers of the dead!

Jergalites are allowed to use the undead so long as they're doing so to fulfill their obligations . They are strongly opposed to undead not sanctioned by their church, but their church does sanction them nonetheless. Jergal ain't some lesser Kelemvor. Remember he was Myrkul's lackey until very recently, and long before that held the top spot himself before getting bored and handing it over to Myrkul.

Fair enough, but if the character has his own compunctions against undead, he'd be dissuaded from taking that domain, as domain choices are made by the cleric as areas to focus their training and faith upon.

I also think it's funny that the undeath domain fits the P&P death domain better than the NWN2 death domain fits its P&P counter part. Obsidian really ****ed up :P

That's well and good, but we're all limited by the game engine here. Domain limitations by deity were put in to prevent the gratuitous powerbuilding and/or totally inappropriate domain selection that would otherwise be possible. If the deity you're interested in doesn't have enough viable options available then post a help request stating which domains you'd like to take. A discussion thread isn't going to lead to any general agreement on loosening the rules. If you have requests relating to a specific PC then the Help forum is the appropriate place.
