  • Appraise and questions about it.

I've been trying to do some searching on how appraise skill works, and it seems as though its a 30% discount/increase with a roll check in either direction.

So I'm curious what level of an appraise skill has been known to cause a favorable check? I was wanting to make a little hafling that was more haggler than battler, and I did make him. He's only lvl 3 atm, but he has approx 9 appraise and he doesn't have any price variation at the merchants I tested. I know 9 isn't a ton, but I would have thought it was better than 0, and I suppose it is as for a die roll, but what kind of appraise skill do the characters of Sundren have to roll against? I'd guess its not any different than in the campaign game, but I never made a character with high appraise in game before to compare, so I don't know .

Sorry if this has already been discussed, I did some searches on appraise and skills, and etc but came up empty, so hopefully its a new thread.

    Thanks all.

P.S. Is there anyone who has had enough appraise to win the rolls and see the price decrease?

Most of the merchants I've found in Sundren do not apply an Appraise check when they open their store. That's a design choice that's been made. Appraise is still a valuable roleplay skill--try using it when you're haggling with PCs.

Actually appraise does work and works on some of the better merchants for selling things, however the mechanics for it are pretty lousy if it works like I think it does. As far as I can figure out, with no real testing just random observations, appraise seems to make a roll every time you get a new rank in appraise, maybe the first time you use it. And then it keeps that roll until you increase your rank in appraise, and end up with a better roll which could be next level or in several levels. Thats just my assumption based on what I've seen.

Regardless, max it out every level and you will start noticing a difference and it will change as you go up, and better prices as your skill changes. I know for a fact that Catalina has gotten several pricing changes as she has leveled up, with maxed out appraise. I'm not sure if appraise affects purchasing prices, although I have gotten the feeling that it doesn't. I do know it affects selling prices.

I have noticed that it helps when you go to SELL things.

It does seem to work much better when you are selling things to merchants. But, buying for merchants, especially Exigo merchants, doesn't seem to help much. And even a low score will help your selling price to merchants.

Actually there's two calculations I won't divulge that go into store buy/sell rates, one of them is a fixed formula that includes your appraise skill. The other (depending on the store's faction) includes your reputation for that faction into the math. So if you had a really high reputation with the Exigo lets say, and you also had a very high appraise, then together you would get some great discounts.
