  • Evil, CvC and You

Being an evil character or one who goes against the grain isn't easy.

In Sundren we have many examples of characters who break the law, act rude, fight against "good" factions, and/or cause mischief like it's their mission in life. I think it's fair to say we all know these characters give Sundren depth, and make it a more interesting place. Things would be rather dull if everyone was a Paladin, or true neutral.

However, many times, players who have evil characters are ostracized by the player population because people think they're evil or rude or callous or inconsiderate or selfish themselves. As players, I implore you to recognize the difference between players and characters. For example, Slanke, the person, is not the crazy, selfish, undead loving hellion that Samantha, the character, is.

We, the staff, implore characters to act as they should. For example, as a DM, I may not want to fight a level 3 character with my level 15 Veritas Spellslinger, but if they're in the wrong area acting the wrong way, realistically something needs to happen. We owe it to realism and our high standards of role playing to be true to our characters.

Also, please keep in mind that many evil characters have it much, much harder than non-evil characters because they are ostracized from the main community. This means they very often have to spend time alone, are forced out of locations that contain merchants or are common meeting points, and have to fight off their enemies constantly. While I do not expect your characters to give them a break or act any differently, I do hope you appreciate what they're doing for all of us: making Sundren dynamic, differed, and interesting.

Finally, and most importantly, let me close by saying that no player should ever send another player a nasty tell after CvC has occurred. If it's in-character for a PC or DM to attack your character, whether they're 2 or 20 levels higher than yours, please be mature and realize that what transpired was role playing. Obviously, if the CvC was not in-character, making it PvP, or you feel griefed, please contact a DM; however, rude or upsetting comments are inappropriate are against the rules.

    PVP Quick Tips
    • DO set the other player to hostile BEFORE CvC
    • DO know the difference between Character vs Character (good) and Player vs Player (bad)
    • DO send a tell after CvC and make sure they're okay
    • DO contact a DM if you feel someone has broken the rules
    • DO use subduel when appropriate
    • DO act and respond IC at all times
    • DO NOT sent threats, insults, or angry messages after your character has been killed
    • DO NOT engage in CvC against the same character more than once per real life day

As always, we the staff are here for any questions you may have. Thanks.

That is something that hasn't been proven yet

I died only once in a PvP fight till now. It was obvious i didn't have a chance (level 4 fighter vs something like a level 10 wizard). We didn't have any occ messages before it it. But the IC communication was enough to be alert. Then he set me on hostile and gave me a little taste of his powers. But i had the chance to run away. Well...i didn't and so i died. My first idea was shi... but then i realized that i had the chance to retreat and just didn't use it. And you shouldn't complain when you die just because you are to stupid to run away.

So i think such a fight is valid as long as the low level has a chance to realize the danger and to run away. But a finger of death out of nowhere is really no option.

Speaking only from my own experiences as playing an "evil" character; I have found the community to actually be quite supportive and friendly. It's no secret where I spend the majority of my time while I am in game, and yet, not once have I been swarmed by mobs of good aligned characters seeking my destruction.

The RP we have shared has always been professional, only leading to actual conflict (CvC) a small number of times.
I will admit, it's fun being the antagonist, but we are lucky enough to be part of a mature community, which makes all the effort seem worthwhile in the end.
Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
      Contagion to this world.

I haven't had much trouble in this regard. The players involved in my CvCs have been sensitive in a way that Jack is not.

          Yep.

I think as long as we treat other players how we'd want to be treated, all will be okay. This post was simply to remind people that players are different from characters, and to be understanding and respectful when CvC goes down.

All in all, I think our player population is very mature. This is just a friendly little reminder.
