That's still a bit extreme. Maybe if it took half exp or something, but a full level permanently is bad...

Level 9 spell: Permenant Level Decrease

So it seems the focus has now turned to Energy Drain >.>
Energy drain is only permanent if you leave it unattended to for 24 hours, which at that point there is a fortitude save per level drained to avoid it from becoming a permanent level loss. Take in mind that these are all PnP rules and I don't think OE used these exactly. Just like you do not die when your con is 0, or you are not paralized if your str or dex reach 0.
Also restoration removes all negative levels and even restores one permanently lost level from this effect. Greater will return to you all levels lost, permanent or otherwise. So there is a counter, and it is also two spell levels lower.

Come on people, getting bunched up about lvl 9 spells already?
Dream on... if it gets anywhere near the point where this is a possibility let the DMs make a call on it (with player input) and RP it out accordingly.
On that note: "I WANT TIMESTOP BACK IN THE GAME OMG!!!" (j/k)PC - Corwin Eska'las (Sun Elf pursuing the dream of becoming a Bladesinger)
Alt PC - Brevin Smoothands (meticulously groomed half orc bard swashbuckler... sort of... sings great, less fighting)

Looking at the spell script itself, I can safely say you will not lose XP or character levels.
1 - The spell applies a permanent duration effect. This effect cannot be removed by resting or dispelling, but it is only an effect. The XP on the character sheet is not affected.
2 - Failure to treat the effect does not mean you permanently lose XP either. The Level Drain effect just does not go away.
3 - There is no scripted functionality for permanently losing a level (i.e. being reset to halfway between your last level and your current one)
There is nothing to fear. Just get a restoration spell and you'll be right as rain.

Please players, do not be paranoid. I read the script.
Energy Drain in default implementation places a SupernaturalEffect of EffectDrainLevel. Nothing in the code would cause permanent level loss.
Spell Resistence does work on it.
You can save vs Negative energy on it.
Once those occur the effect is added. Nothing shows it removing any levels permanently.
I may change it to pen and paper rules, however... hmmm...

I have never been a fan of nerfing mage spells. If you have ever read any FR, DL, or any other D&D novels, then you would know the single most powerful class is the wizard. Look at Elminster, Khelben Blackstaff, the Simbul, Azalin, Manshoon, the list goes on and on. If a mage manages to reach a stage where he can cast 9th level spells, then he is truly a force to be reckoned with. Personally, I think removing a few levels is a little *weak*. I'd prefer to see a loss of about 5 levels permanently. And we're lucky they didn't even implement the spell Wish into this game, as with that spell almost anything can happen. Leave wizards the way they are...if we are going to nerf them, might as well nerf every single other class as well...and how much fun would that be."My dual blades shall seek those who defy nature's art. For the spirit of the forest lives within my heart."

True Wizards I'd never nerf. The draw back of wizard isn't in NWN2 as it is now, that being the spell must be prepared first.
Players tend to rest whenever they need different spells, so classes with memorized spells aren't as hindered. In P&P, If you had wave after wave of skeletons rush you, what would you rather be, a fighter with great cleave and a giant blunt weapon of some sort, or a wizard with level 9 spells? The balance act between the caster and the melee masters is lost in NWN.
If I were ever to nerf a caster, it'd be based upon this alone. That rest would be abused to switch spells.

Wizards.
The problem with wizards is, that in PnP, you get X spells per day. In NWN2 this becomes X spells per rest. The truth is NWN2 can't ever be exactly what PnP is/was, and that is why things like the FB's frenzy skill is far stronger in NWN2 then it is in PnP.
Thankfully, in NWN2 they don't make you carry around your spellbook and a satchel full of components

If you ask me, they adapted it as best as they could. :/Originally posted by Jhiroth View PostThe problem with wizards is, that in PnP, you get X spells per day. And wee, clerics get it too.
