  • PnP and NWN

Who here plays Pen and Paper(PnP) D&D? For how long? Excited about the release of 4E?

I know some people have come from games like WOW, and know little of all the rules by which NWN is based. Many of the mechanics are actually quite different, though I know that Sean attempts to follow PnP rules as a general guideline.

i don't know much about fourth edition. but it doesn't seem like a huge advancement like it was from second to third edition. it feels more like the jump from 3.0 to 3.5.

basically an excuse to grab money from their customers by re-releasing the same old product with a couple of "tweaks".

Played AD&D for some time years ago, started 3rd edition again last year and know the rules more or less. Not going to say I know all of them by heart, but that answer fits me better than 'I kinda know', which I presume would be getting the basic idea of NWN's mechanics.

EDIT: 4th edition seems more like a promo tour for the whole 'play at home with friends all over the world' internet client thingie (which NWN is a far better medium for), along with making extra money from people buying all the books again.

I played some 3rd edition a few times, but I was largely clueless as to what was going on
        Characters:
Peridan Twilight, one-eyed dog of the Legion, deceased.
Daniel Nobody, adventurer and part time problem solver.

Yeah I'm between 'kinda know' and 'know all the 3.5 rules'. I've played in a DnD group, a few years back, but that broke up because people were moving away. I haven't actually had the opportunity to play PnP DnD in about 3 or 4 years now, but I still liked reading about all the classes/monsters/ etc. I also played a lot of BG/2/ToB/Icewind Dale/NWN, etc. Basically games that use the rule sets, so I never forgot how to play. I'm sure I could pick it up today, at any point, and just start rolling up characters or what not like nothing has really changed. I don't know a whole lot about 4th edition though, what I've heard sounds kind of cool though.

I only ever played 1st edition in PnP, but all the others via computer games.

2nd for a time - sporadically, those rare times when the whole group could fit a date into their schedule. Though I did read through all the handbooks and compendiums I could get my hands on. I got to know 3rd edition mostly though NWN.

And I'm likely to mix them up too, heh.

I've never played P&P. I have tried to learn as I go in NWN how it works though. I think I have a good idea of how it all goes down now.

                  I play PnP every saturday

Most anyways, that's why I'm not usually online saturday nights.

I think it's something noobs without stylus' and touch screens or fully qwerty keyboards use to transmit text information. *snickers* That's so primitive. *This post bleeds sarcasm all over the freshly cleaned floors*

I remember playing the original D&D in the old red boxed sets, as well as the original unearthed arcana, dieties and demi-gods, etc. (ya, I'm that old.)
I havent had the chance to play PnP for over 10 years. 2nd edition was the last version out when I was an avid player. Fond memories though, sadly my schedule just doesnt allow time for group RP sessions except online.

I kinda want to try it, but I'm more of an "underground" nerd. I don't want to publically affiliate my true identity with you wierd out-of-the-closet nerds.

I most certainly know all the rules for 3.5. Or at least as many as are realistically possible. With several thousand pages of splatbooks to learn, I doubt anyone other than the hardest-core of the CharOp junkies knows all of 3.5e. I particulary like Psionics (from 3.5) and the Tome of Battle mechanics.

                            Regarding 4th edition:
It's looking better. Back in June (July?) of last year, when it was announced, the entire WotC boards exploded. And I was there. In fact, I was one of the few people who was able to grab screenies of the new 4e webpage before the servers died. The best place for news is ENWorld, or the "CharOp look at 4e" thread on the Character Optimization boards on the WotC forums. There's also a fan-collected version of the Delve adventure DDXP-goers were treated to a couple weeks ago. The only that's really made me go "HUH?" so far is them claiming to have 150 (or was it 500? probably 150) feats in the first Player's Handbook alone. Yikes.

[EDIT]: Oh, also, for online PnP games, RPtools, specifically the MapTool program, can't be beat. I mean, it's powerful, and it's free! How awesome is that? And weekly betas!
