  • I wish our players did more of ______

Like the other thread on how DMs can improve, I'd like to create this thread to talk about our players, how we can improve as roleplayers, how we can have MORE fun, etc.

What can each of us do to improve the in-game experience for one another? What would you like to see your fellow players do? What are some examples of in-game behavior you loved or didn't like so much?

Please keep your feedback constructive. This isn't the forum to get people in trouble. Let's not name names. This isn't necessarily a kudos thread, either. This is more about what works, what doesn't, and where we want to go. Let's hear it!

You guys are great, and I don't have a lot of feedback. But there are some small things I've noticed over the past few months. However, for every person that might do one of these things, there's probably someone who doesn't.

1.) Stop all OOC conversation in-game. Use tells, or party chat instead. Emote * daydreams * when you go AFK. But stop using OOC chat.

2.) Act as a mentor for new players.

3.) Spend more time posting in IC/RP related threads then in the OOC threads. Seriously, gals and guys, it breaks my heart when 90% of the posts are OOC.

4.) When rules are broken, try to resolve the issue yourselves. 9 times out of 10 the person doesn't know the rules, isn't paying attention, or made a mistake. Go to DMs as a last resort.

5.) Take screenshots when you have a problem by using the PRINT SCREEN button. These are saved in your My Documents folder. You never know when you'll need them.

6.) Keep welcoming new players! You guys are very hospitable.

7.) Some of you have your own journals for your players. That rocks!

8.) Use <i> to emphasize sarcasm or important words in-game, but don't over do it.

I have a take on this I would like to see other players do - actually read the rules. I've seen some players, normally new players blatantly break server rules and I'm like "y'know..." . I try to tell people privately x is against the rules you shouldn't do that, instead of reporting them, and normally it solves things, but every now and then I have talked to a DM about it. In one case the insinuating discussion (a very long one might I add) actually ended up in me getting to know one of the other players a lot better lol. I know I'm not perfect either, I could probably work on my ooc, I try to keep it to party and tells, but sometimes when your whole party are the only other people around and you start using the old ((ooc here)) thing you kind of forget about it. For me though, whenever I join a server I read the rules so I'm not messing anyone up, and then if it turns out I like the server a lot I try to know the rules even better then that, especially controversial ones like pvp. Just my 2 cents.

During DM events, or intense RP moments, everyone should keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with NOT being the center of attention. I'm guilty of this too, and I think that most of us are at some point or another, but it is really annoying when someone tries to force themselves into a situation, into the forefront. Supporting roles are just as valuable as star roles, and keep in mind that everyone will eventually get their time to shine - but if it isn't your time, accept it.

Nothing is worse than 10 players spamming text across the screen during an event, when half of what is being said is for the sole purpose of attention seeking. Keep in mind it is hard for the DM, too, who is normally only controlling one or two NPC's at a time, whereas there might be five times that amount in PC's... the DM will have to keep track of everything that everyone is saying, and respond accordingly. Make it easier on everyone, for everyone, and stand down and take a supporting role when you can.

I haven't seen him in forever, but there was an Orc named Zurgoth Zirken, I think it was... something like that... and in the very first quest Karthus was ever involved in, Zurgoth completely stood down and let me and the others take dominant roles. Of course, I crashed in the next area transition and never came back that night, but it still stuck with me. If players did that more often, it would give newbies a time to be in the spotlight, and enhance their first server experiences.

I wish our players had more respect for the server the play on, and those they are playing with.

A bit of humility can go a long way in a multi-player environment, especially one that is owned by someone else

When I play I'm all most 100% IC.

Except for when I am testing certain things that I think are bugs. If that happens I tend to let players know whats going on as they approach.

I'm afraid I'm a little more than guilty for the OOC bit. My bad!

                  G) Be mindful of the abilities you use. Rogues should try not to slap on stealth without something to hide behind (toss in an emote like *hides in the tall grass* if you have to). Casters should examine the spell text before casting (if it says evil or negative domain, and your alignment is good, you probably don't want to use it). Don't use or take feats just because you can, and because they make you uber. THINK about what you're going to do and if it actually applies to your character.

                  H) FAULTS! Think not only about how your character excels, but what flaws he or she has. Talks too much? Shy? Stubborn? Too happy-go-lucky? Flaws help OTHER PCs shine when you interact with them, but they also make YOU memorable as a character and a player.

                  I) Learn to concede defeat. If your INT is 8, maybe you shouldn't solve IG puzzles even if you as the player can. If your CHA is low, maybe you should concede points to others in arguments more often. There's no surer way to blend into the background than when you're trying to create an impecable, perfect hero or villain.

                      H)

                      good point tao.

to add to his point, its can be very interesting playing a PC with no strong points and just basing their personailty on their flaws alone (witness me in game sometime, I really am not good for anything.. well I fish ok, but thats about it)

I wouldn't say that; I know a certain lady who thinks Snow Hawk is dead sexy.

Agreed about the flaws thing. We need to see more foolishness. I really have the most fun when I am kinda flawed.

When I first got my monk back after the server wipe, there was some bug that kept him at level 1 at first, and he had almost no gold! He walked over to the hills and was barely able to handle a single goblin. Then some evil players tried to mug him, but he truly had nothing to his name. He was completely ignorant, having just arrived in Sundren after escaping from a life in slavery. It was a lot of fun playing a clueless idiot, and the uber players mugging him seemed to enjoy it too.

                            Q) you can use the journal's notes section to write down information. I use this all the time for remembering nicknames and other factoids, which is nice because I have the memory of a goldfish.

                            84) try to ignore the green tendril-y aura that people get when they're diseased, and instead, look for other clues to their current physical health. how does the person know it's a sickness, and not inebriation, or maybe even some wacky mind-control spell? it's a personal NWN2 pet peeve of mine; I think there's like a hundred cool situations that could arise from diseases, but they're not really an option when everyone comments on how horrifyingly deathly ill your char looks just because of that green tendrilly aura.

also, high five for flawed characters!
