  • Dynamic XP adjustment?

A few days ago i went to the goblins cave with another player. We RPed the whole way and the whole trip took about 2-3 hours. We had a great time. But the XP we gained on the trip was...*scratches his head*...quite limited when you consider how long it took.

So i wonder what you think about a dynamic XP adjustment that depends on the rate at which you are killing things.

Come again? I thought it was always based on challenge rating.

There is a RP XP that is given based on time. 30xp every 10 minutes or some such. Though that can sometimes be... fussy as to when it hands out this 30xp. Bear in mind that this is only handed out out of combat.

Good stuff, this is what the server is about. Remember its a RP server, if you had a great time why are you worried about xp?

I find it curious when people actively choose to play on a RP server then question the xp they are getting for killing monsters.

XP may be a bit short in Sundren in some respects, again I can't stress enough that our XP model as it stands is lacking our scripted quests which we are hard at work to put in Sundren. When they are in the mod it will balance things exactly how we want them.

Perhaps, but then there are plenty more ways to develop your character then getting a few more hp, bab, skills etc.

Yeah, but levels play a larger role than anyone is willing to accept. At 5th level, Druids can turn into animals, and at 10th or 11th, they can turn into tree-thingies. At 16th, they turn into an elemental. All of those things revolve around levels and make for incredible RP opportunities and profound character development.

Casters get new spells every level or every other level, and that is paramount to their development, since it is essentially their life goal. RDD's get wings, Palemasters get grafts, Ice Furies get auras, Dreadmasters get cohorts - these things are all level-dependant. Skills are also level dependant, and since everyone likes rolling bluff checks and all that, XP is significant in that regard to.

So yeah, even on an RP server, levels and XP are very, very important to character development. In fact, they represent character development, in many areas. This is not to say that it replaces the character development brought on from RP, only that they are both part of the equation.

Yeah, I don't think many people or characters have the goal of not getting stronger or better.

I have to agree, while role playing is a big part of the fun of the server, how can you honestly role play a masterful wizard, or an impeccable archer when every time you go out to fight the orcs with your friends they brush off your spells like it was nothing, or you couldn't hit them with an arrow if your life depended on it? If you could achieve these kinds of skills without levels (look at the real world, you might be able to become a master marksman with a bow but when a bear is charging at you it doesn't mean you're gonna drop him with a single arrow and walk away like it was nothing...) I probably wouldn't even care too much about levels, but they are an intricate part of progression that has to be accepted. Just my 2 cents.

Learning things IC also suffers without levelling, you could spend 3 weeks roleplaying learning how to pick a pocket, but unless you just levelled you wont actually be any better at it.

I realize this is getting off-topic, but something Jaeram said sparked my interest, and I must respectfully disagree.

IMHO, thinking a character is "born to be the thing you want to be" is a common fopah (SP?). All characters should struggle, and even "masterful wizards" were not born masterful--they learned along the way. Entering into RP with the mindset that you are already a well-rounded, powerful hero is a dangerous trap. Flaws and struggles are what make great stories and characters!

But on the larger issue, I agree that development does incorporate leveling. Some people approach RP without paying any heed to their character sheets; others enjoy that aspect. I think it's important to be respectful of both sides of that coin as players and not question their approach to RP.

Valid points all, but lets get back to the original point about altering xp based on time it takes to kill things.

Why should you get more xp because you took longer to kill things? It wasn't any harder to kill them because you took a break from fighting and had a chat. Won't this lead to people deliberately hanging around to up the xp they are getting. Where would the cut off be for the system (ie how long between kills)?

As far as I remember, there used to be a script that did exactly this long ago. It was basically to reward people who didn't grind endlessly, they would get more XP when they did go out and fight, until they got to some threshold, then they started getting normal xp again. .

I can't remember why it was taken out though.
