It looks like there's a good chance I can recover a significant amount of characters to last night, however this process make take up to a day or two, if anyone loses out because of this I will take it on a case by case basis.

Patience, as always will be a virtue.

Patience is one virtue I lost when I was dropped on my head as a kid. Why can't I use some other virtue... like humor? Yeah, I can do that one. Oh well, I'll go find something else to do instead of checking up on the forums every 10 minutes.

Hey, think positive! Did you have fun during that month? So this would be your chance to have another month full of fun

Will the recovery you are talking about Saulus mean any characters we create at the moment will be lost? Will those recovered be added to servervault or will it simply be replaced?

Great question Vanya. . . I would not mind making a brand new character if you can't fix the problem. But if I make one today and you do fix it will that mean the new character will also get wiped?

After scanning every sector of the drives I only managed to find duplicates of the same characters currently on the vault. This leads me to believe that there is some kind of bug in the server and it was perhaps writing to a different location.

I restored some files which have timestamps for this month but most of them look to me like the same versions already in the current vault. If you make any new characters, no you will not lose them. In order to fix the character deletion feature I migrated a large portion of the server files to a different location, however the entire active vault now is an exact duplicate of the old one, so it is very strange and a bit of a mystery where it was writing before as nothing exists on the hardrive (not even traces of files) that match up to what people are describing.

There's not much more that can be done other than to remind everyone it's a game, we're in beta, and sometimes these things happen, much to my dismay.

Chin up though, we have some cool goodies coming at the end of this month. We've been working on Sundren's beta for over a year now and there is always the light at the end of the tunnel.

Well... you probbally already thought of this but just incase... The time stamps would probbally be very similiar cause people are logging in to check there characters..thus saving them again with a new timestamp.
                    Active Characters:
Tassafina Lightleaf - A little sneaky but not as sneaky as Ithil

                    Silivren Anar
                    Merka Gillina

                    Hideing outs:
Alyssa Swiftwing - Priestess of Yondalla
                    Ravenne Naur'Loki - Roar!

The point I'm trying to make is that nothing else exists other than what I have, and nothing has been deleted. The source vault that I used to put what's up now was all that exists on the server's HD so there's nothing else for me to pull to restore it. I've even tried recovering parts of the drive trying to find file fragments that might shed some light on it, but again it only turned up other copies of what I already have.

I wouldn't say that i am complaining. And it is really nice to see that the mess in my vault is gone. But the characters that are still there must be a version that is something like 2 weeks old or even older and the fact that a lvl 8 char is missing...well...i'd better shut up before i say something that gets me banned

Meh, so some chars are a bit lower or disappeared. Look on the bright side though, now char deletion is working again and we, if you are anything like me, can remove the huge scrolling char selection list!

Plus my stupid decision to spend a hastily regretted big bag of cash on some totally unsuitable armour has been erased! Hurrah!

Amen to that. I think its a miracle that we have something like Sundren running as smoothly as it does, lets celebrate that instead.

Not sure what you have in place admin wise but a backup system might be a good idea, or if this was your backup copy you used then checking the system. With the best will in the world hardware messes up from time to time. As frustrating as this is going to be to spend time going round and round and round in the hills again, losing the entire PC record would have been much worse.

What wasn't paid for in donations for the server has so far come out of my own pocket. There is little I have in the way of backup capabilities other than another drive to store the copy of the vault on which I do have, however that copy is as old as what is there already as well.

If I was in a better position both time and money-wise to have something in place superior to this solution I would be using it.

I am in network engineering so backup procedures are far from anything new to me.

Sundren will have a few custom in-house PrCs by the end of this month. We've been betatesting a few for awhile.
