  • Death on Sundren

Well I got to experince the new death rules for the first time and I have to say I am worried....

16000p for a raise in a temple is just way to much for many people. The most money I have ever had with Takhla was 10kgp. I know why the system has been changed but its way to harsh now in my view. People are going to be too afraid to leave camp soon. If your like me and only play one PC having them die and be put out of action for a few hours is not going to be a lot of fun for people.

If there is no DM on when you die and no cleric of high enough level you could be stuck in the forest of eternal night for any amount of time.

I know the new system has been brought in to make death mean something but I would say its too harsh at the moment. I would suggest giving people a way to respawn after a death...maybe lose half a levels worth of xp or something, at least then they would not be trapped in there. I would also suggest the price of diamonds be lowered to so it costs maybe 6000gp to raise someone in a temple, a sum that should be in the reach of most people. Clerics could maybe require only 1 or 2 diamonds as well?

I do wonder if we will start to see high level groups heading into the hills again to farm for gold in "safe" low level areas to finance all these diamonds they might need.

A lot of assumptions here without a lot of information to make them. Signus' are there for your respawning, use them wisely. We plan to implement them in drops, if we think they are too hard to get, we'll make them more accessible.

One of the easiest ways to die is soloing, avoid it. Keep yourself well stocked. There's no reason why if you're careful that you won't be stuck there. You're not forced to be in dungeons 24/7, pick your dungeon running more wisely. After all the only reason why you'd die other than doing that would be from PvP, which is a different story entirely.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Quite true...Takhla is level 13 so does not have any signus items. Also I was not soloing I was in a party which included 3 PC's of level 13. A confused halforc hitting you for 99hp of damge ruins anyones day.

Also its the first time I have taken Takhla out of the camp in nearly a week. I dont think you could ever say my play style is grinding *shrugs* .

Makes taking people to a temple something you don't want to do ever ^_^ How much is a life worth? I've already been giving Signus items for event rewards. I know clerics who already have diamonds.

Truthfully? It's been up a few days, and the fact that you're saying "I'm worried coming alive is hard and people will be afraid to die so much they won't go and risk their lives needlessly" means the desired effect has happened.

Seek Events, seek factions, seek alternate ways to benefit your character with what you want. Go adventuring in dungeons, but be prepared so you don't die, find friends to support you, equip yourself effectively.

You're basically going to see people doing what they should have been doing since the server opened. RP'ing the fact that things are dangerous. Those who can't handle the danger will likely say "You ruined me just picking up and trivializing dungeons by making it dangerous!" and possibly leave. Others will go "Wow, I actually am more cautious now! I can see why they did this!"

However, best part of this new system was when this Dwarf murdered someone, and couldn't just raise him on the spot XD I was laughing so hard. He then tried to play it off with OOC comments. I know he was thinking "Shit shit shit!" the kill suddenly became VERY real to him because he couldn't just rest, cast ressurrect, and make it go away like nothing happened.

The problem with loosing only a half level on death is that players will try even harder to grind to get it back. Which means leading them back to the same behaviour that "might" of gotten them in the FEN in the first place.
Being in the FEN w/out respawn is like a huge huge time out. Being dead is a punishment IC and OOC that is how I see it as, but I am more a fatalist than most. There is always some resistance, but as you said player's will just harbor around a camp fire or actually start interacting with each other more in a NON-combat way. Maybe fall in love and have kids... LOL! Or pay some of those adventuring taxes on their loot incomes.. ^_^

Anyways, I think death is scary even to the most bravest of people as a quote I found says.
"It is believed that brave people are immune to fear, but in truth they live with fear intimately"... ((unknown source))

Bravery is not something in my opinion that should be desensitized just because we are in game world were mortality is seen as a inconvenience and to be bypassed.

A current example is the late Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan's candidate for President.

She knew of the risks involved to her life and being in public in a country where extremist factions threatened her life daily. She rose above it, she never gave in but still feared for her life and those of her friends and family on a daily basis. Her fall to an assassin ended her life but emphasizes her bravery because she was afraid, but still had the courage to do what so many people are not able to. She wasn't fearless, she was the exact opposite... but her convictions to her people and obligations to them rose above it and to her, was worth the sacrifice.

What is the meaning of living when death is trivial?

**Point being.. is it worth possibly dieing for a stag? or for that next magical item? or that silly piece of armor? the Majority of the adventuring on the server was based on some superficial material need that puts characters into jeopardy when in reality it wouldn't be common sense to any rational person to do. For some of my characters, I prefer saving combat and the risk of death when it really means something. For others that were meant for combat, I am fully prepared to never see them again for a long time if I loose my signus's, which is part of the deal when you decide to go hostile on something.

Also ask your party members to use .subdual when you enter combat areas that use confusion spells or other types of mind altering spells on those poor weak willed tanks. It will save your butt!

Welcome to adventuring! It's not supposed to be a happy go lucky romp in a park, it's a life or death situation, risk vs reward. Finally it's actually risky. Hell, I'd prefer permadeath instead of even the possibility of being resurrected, but that's me.

Well said GBX. I am impressed with the new death mechanics. Sundren's direction is really heading toward RP excellence. Looking forward to seeing what is next. Thank you!

Are characters conciously aware of what these Signus things do? If my character had one, would he be able to tell himself:

"I can do whatever I want because I have two lives, hahahaahah. Yay for me, and such!"

Well, my $0.02, as a cleric I feel it will greatly diminish my quality of play. I don't see nerfs on other spellcasters so why hit the clerics with the raise dead and resurrection penalty. Should mages require diamonds to cast say fireball, fod, hellball, etc? Reaching a level that gives a cleric the power to cast resurection is one of the cool things about being a cleric. As a non grinder, I say grab your stones and throw out the grinders if you dont like them. Dont penalize everyone for a few you dont like.
Permadeath is fine by me, I like making new characters anyway, and that would at least keep fresh faces around constantly. But it is a fantasy adventure roleplay game, I particularly like the fantasy part.
I havent experience this new death system, but if its going to delevel my cleric and cost me a fortune to perform a spell Ive worked hard to attain, well then it doesnt sound fair to me.
My $0.02, thats all. CYA in game.
