Actually, the soldiers in 300 and all Spartans not only trained from birth, but were for the most part battle tested and hardened because during most of human history and the history of the Greek city states, warfare was a constant state.

And, my example of Bruce Lee is that they do go through rigorous training, but the battle, controlled if you want to call it, hardens them further and gets them to that next level in their art. I have seen and been in tournaments that were not so "controlled," battle/tournaments hardens them. I would definitely take a boxer who has many wins under his belt (battle tested) than someone who has boxed in a controlled and training atmosphere their whole life everytime.

As to military examples, there are some exceptions, but there are many more examples of officers that studied and advanced in peacetime, but could not function in actual combat. Or, they froze their first time and then as they became battle tested/hardened, they excelled.

The bottom line is what I said in my first line.........play the way you want to based on your conception within the bounds of the game and its rules. I don't think there is a wrong or right way, unless it goes completely against the server and DM rules.

I didn't say spartans in my example on purpose, I just said soldiers and townsfolk.

My point is, people fight all their life couldn't top what Bruce Lee was in fighting. Seriously, most of his fights he ever had were over in a moment. The movies drew them out, but when people would challenge him on the streets, it was just quick and done.

He was a legend, not from all the people he fought, but he studied a method of fighting that just could not be topped. And I'm of the opinion, if you study correctly, doesn't matter if you had real world experience or not, you will succeed.

I have trained martial arts for over 10 years and I have competed in several national competitions. And I would say that a person who only trained by fighting other people all day would not get better, he would get killed or at least permanently injure himself. 90% is training and 10% is experience, at least in martial arts.

If we are speaking about martial arts, it's all about what form against what form. I've got ten bucks on me right now knocking out most non master level martial artist outside of a few schools of arts.

I think this can differ greatly depending on the character of the person as well. People learn through different methods. You could have someone who has done nothing but real world experience combat, and someone with nothing but trained experience. Depending on how they learn and take in information, they could be dead even or one pull over the other, even if it was the same length of time, and then learn at the same speed.

To clarify I meant full contact martial art where the body after a real match take a lot of damage.

I was personally thinking more of like, on the street sort of thing, not a match of any sort. I understand what you mean though, and that is deff true.
