Over the past few weeks, I?ve noticed a disturbing trend among the male PCs that I interact with, namely the inclination to use derogatory terms in relation to my character.
My character has been called, in no particular order and on more than one occasion, ?bitch?, ?slut?, 'skank', ?whore?, ?c**t?, usually when she rebuffs an advance or does something someone does not like. The response I typically get, if I inquire as to the need to use such terms, is that ?It?s not me, it?s my character.? Fine and good if that?s the case...

Now, I?m not easily offended and I?m not unduly upset. I?m not looking for any type of rule about profanity or some such. I?m very aware it?s just a game and we all adopt personas different from those of our true selves (I hope). The majority of the players I?ve encountered ? even those who insist on such terms - seem to be mature, reasonable people. And if its absolutely neccessary for your RP, so be it. I?m just asking, gentlemen (and gentlemen PCs) that you consider moderating the use of such terms or consider less offensive alternatives that still gets your point across.

The alternative is that I create a rabid, feminist, Andrea Dworkin-type character and hunt down the chauvinistic, patriarchal dogs and put them to the sword. Hmmm.

I don't agree. It's an excuse to be an adolescent, sexist arsehat, regardless of whether it's IC or not. Players shouldn't have to put up with it.

EDIT - Please stop using alternative fonts, I end up having to do the same when quoting because I don't know the default off the top of my head. Thanks.

While I've never heard anyone say something like this myself, I'd definitely agree that the use of such words in a sexist context should be prohibited, just as the use of real-world racist words should be (although, I'd say regular swearing such as using the f-word as an exclamation shouldn't be disallowed).

I don't even call Lilly those names, even if that's actually the character's occupation lol... There's a difference between cursing between every two words and use derogatory terms when addressing other people. I fully agree with Ash, roleplay should never been an excuse to be a real ass... How would you react if your Chultan/Mulhorandi/whatever character was the target of racist slurs that are also used in the modern real world? A line has to be drawn somewhere... this wouldn't even be happening if "common sense" was something actually "common". :P

I guess this is slightly derogatory but I haven't heard anyone say much worse that the word s**t or possibly the odd f**k before.

-Perhaps get a screenshot of it - (I know it's not a complaint as such but I never knew people used those words anyway)

There some things I will not say IC even if my character is a complete bad ass who was brought up by sailors in a brothel. There are times it just seems to cross the line and if someone else does it I'll respond IC or just try ignore it, if my character can (ie not being addressed as such). But if it really gets out of hand I'll send a tell.

Gotta say I'm quite surprised to hear you've copped so much of that. I'm in no way opposed to 'obscene' language, but once it gets racist/sexist, that's not really cool. Racism is a part of Faerun, but modern racist terms play no real part... similarly, some characters are bound to be sexist (drow females for instance), but there's far better ways to RP it than with the sort of stuff that you mention. Once again, I'm quite surprised =/

I've seen plenty of swearing on the server, but usually just for emphasis, which is fine by me; I'm Australian, and we consider four letter words to be the equivalent of punctuation. I wouldn't want any sort of restrictions on language use, but people ought to be a bit creative rather than deploying terms (and attitudes) from their dodgy commercial hip-hop.

Language like that should be disccussed IC'ly before it is used in game between two characters. Let's face it...we aren't sitting across a table from each other playing PnP so we honestly really have no idea if what's appearing on our screens is RP or not...we ASSUME it is but sometimes I have wondered.

                Just my two cents...

This kind of thing does not go in the general forums. Help requests only please.
