  • Classes not on server?

    Hi

As I'm preparing a character for Sundren, I'd like to hear if there are any classes not available on the server at all?

I've read the thread about restricted Classes/Races, and I don't plan on playing any of those. I can also kind of read from the thread that there's no Harper Agent on the server, am I right?

So are there any other classes not present that I should be aware of when I plan my character build?

    Thanx in advance...

All classes are available to play, though some as you have read require in-game events to start off (ie joining the red wizards before you can advance as a red wizard). Harper agents are available to play, the comment you read was that noone has as of yet opted to play that class. I believe GodBeastX has promised to temporarily lose his bowel control should a player in-game actually take levels in Harper Agent.

Applications are managed as stated in the FAQ.

I sketched out a fairly detailed development plan for a workable halfling rogue (2)/Cleric of Brando (3) (Luck/Trick)/Harper (5)/Duelist (10). RPing a meddlesome, swashbuckling, know-it-all hobbit sounded like fun.

Then I had realized that I had made a plan, shuddered, and checked myself into an institution.

Hehe okay... Just to clarify, do you think it is because the class sucks or becuase it doesn't fit in with the world of Sundren that nobody has taken it?

@Unholy Carp: Do you really think it's such a bad thing to sketch out a plan? I think your char idea actually sounds quite cool!

There's no drawback in the class itself, actually. Aside from the RP benefits, you get a neat group buff or two, a few neat save bonuses, four levels of spellcasting, and lots of skillpoints.

The prerequisite feats are the killer--Awareness and Iron Will will have a dubious utility at best. The former because, well, it's trading a feat for +2 to a couple of skills that you're either going to maximize or find no use for. The lack you see in the latter comes when you consider that the spellcasting requirement usually entails that you have a good chance of having a reasonable will save already.

The mileage you can get out of other feats while pursuing other classes plays into the sort of metagaming thought that tends to make you want to be as useful to your adventuring group as possible.

I was mostly just being dramatic.

I actually went ahead and created the character. If I'm not playing my awkward shaman or bossy gnome, I'll try to make him show up.

So in light of these recent posts, GodBeastX should by all accounts have shat himself by now?

Harper agents are very powerful , but in unseen ways. A lot of people don't realize how *essential* saves become later in the game, especially when you start to face off against high-level wizards.

They are essentially the archetypical hero; a real "Jack of all Trades" prestige class. This is why most people ignore them in persistent PW NWN/NWN2, at least when you are talking about powergaming- they really don't do one thing amazingly well, outside of save their own hide- which..for the record, can be an *amazing* ability to have in certain situations:

For example, when a certain necromancer casts "Wail of the Banshee" and obliterates everyone in your party, except for you. There is no such thing as "too much save bonuses". Granted, certain spells don't allow saves, but there are other ways to circumvent them.

They also have many of the thriftiest skills in the game: Appraise, all crafting abilities, bluff, hide, move silently, taunt, tumble, and survival. Dominate Animal isn't as bad as it sounds- all lower-level Summon Monster spells summon animals. Summon a dire wolf on me, will you?

This is a *wee* powergamey, but Rangers (and Bards) make good Harper Agents. The high Reflex/Fortitude saves from your ranger classes will offset the bad Harper Agent Reflex/Fortitude saves, and you should get a few combat abilities from the Ranger classes (I would go with missile weapons, despite what everyone on the NWN2 boards say about missile rangers sucking).

Damn...I think I'm going to make one when I get home.

                        Erm...

Are you supposed to actually study at Candle Keep before taking levels in Arcane Scholar? Or at least say you've studied there?

It's preferable, but I assume Arcane Scholars exist in many places where there are those who follow Candle Keep's methods. Arcane Scholar is not so much a cultural class (like Red Wizards), but more the idea of studying magic from an academic perspective. Arcane Scholars, of course, would promote widespread teaching of magic and it would spread throughout the realms, most likely (evidenced by the bonus to spell saves that group members of an Arcane Scholar get. That's them teaching others). Candle Keep would be the center of the education, but that doesn't mean that there aren't individual Arcane Scholars promoting it who are out in the world teaching other Scholars that have never set foot in Candle Keep.

                            Yahoo.

Kaldaris is an arcane scholar that's never been to Candlekeep-- He defines it as independent study.
"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."
