  • Value of coins

Throughout the Realms, there are many different currency systems, most of which are variants of the following basic principle:

    1000 Coppers = 100 Silver = 10 Gold = 1 Platinum

Sundarian merchants generally accept all common currencies of all Faer?n with few exceptions (one notably being Thay), and most are willing to accept gems and precious stones in lieu of coinage. For large transactions, trade bars smelted by reputable merchant houses and aristocrats are accepted by most reputable merchants, and bank notes issued by the clergy of Waukeen are universally accepted.

The government of Sundren also mints its own coins, following the same principle described above. Apart from differences in nomenclature and appearances, Sundarian coinage is indistinguishable from other standard currencies of the Realms.

A copper coin in Sundren is called an iron, and typically appears as a small square disc with a square hole bored through the middle. This allows merchants and travellers to string up many coins and count them with ease. All irons bear the image of Mundus, the founder of Sundren. The copper coin is the most widely used currency throughout Sundren as well as the Realms.

A silver coin in Sundren is simply called a silver, an oval disc bearing artistic depictions of Sundren City.

A gold coin in Sundren is called a stag, a circular disc wrought in gold with varying images imprinted every few years. The name 'stag' caught on with one particularly popular batch bearing the depiction of a white stag thought native to Sundren. The gold stag itself bears a certain degree of prestige, as most commoners do not see many gold coins throughout their lifetimes.

A platinum coin in Sundren is called a crown, a circular disc with an iron ring encasing it. Only a limited amount has ever been minted. A symbol of luxury, crowns are hard to come by, rare and little demanded, most often exchanged amongst wealthy merchant and noble houses. More practical solutions such as trade bars and bank notes are utilized instead nowadays.
    Quote taken from here: http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1599

The values of coins are confusing me somewhat. Following this description, commoners would have to save up a lifetime for a drink at the tavern, and probably around a hundred lifetimes to rent a room for a week.

My first thought when I read this post was that the coins used by the NWN2 game are actually "irons", the copper coins of Sundren, but I have noticed many referring to the coins as "stags", including DM's.

Does that mean that all adventurers are insanely rich, and that goblins own more money than commoners are likely to see in a lifetime?

Yes. In Soviet Sundren, goblins own YOUUUUUUUU!

Well, they really cant make anything lower then 1 g (For all the drinks..) And they need it to acutally take some gold out of your pocket. I really don't know. Maybe all the taverns and inns you go to are expensive? *Shrug.*

That may be, but that wouldn't explain why each goblin carries around more money than a commoner is likely to see in their entire lifetime.

Okay... I realise you're probably joking, but let's turn that question around then. How did fresh adventurers earn those amounts of money then. Surely not all adventurers are wealthy nobles (when they start out, anyway)

when you start out, you are a level 3 PC, in the Players Hand Book a Level 3 character has a rather large chunk of money.

Think of it as your living the life of a movie star.. do you have enough money to go to some night clubs, buy certain clothes (designer label) and fast cars? Doubtful..but thats how it translates over really.. Adventurers are rich for a reason.. they kill things and do a lot more than a commoner ever would in one life time.

And you think magic is so easy to get? Level 2 scrolls aren't easy peasy stuff. Cantrips are amazing O_o. A cantrip could kill a person easily.

And a housecat can kill a level 1 commoner.

Seriously, do you want us to impliment coppers, silvers and gold pieces? The game treats money as 'gp' - gold pieces. Incidentily, the Sundarian Stag is also a gold piece; see where I'm going with logic here?

Yes, adventurers are insanely rich and could buy multiple homes with their money. It's something that you have to live with in CRPGs because we don't have coppers, silvers, gold, platinum (or variant) in this like we do in PnP. Either ignore the fact that you're all Bill Gates clones, or say that a commoner's earnings are actually higher all over due to the retarded amount of gold pieces flying about.

As for sticking to topic: I think that there is a slight issue with the value of irons, silver, and stags. I think that we should look more into how to work that out. Either saying that the "gold" we pick up are actually coppers, and turn GP into "Irons". So instead of finding 135 GOLD/Stags in a treasure chest in, they would actually be considered irons. Course, if NWN2 had a hak that could create a better currency system, I would very much love to see that implimented, tbh.

Course that 1000 stags you get at level 3, you get 1000 iron, = 100 silver = 10 gold. Which is a LOT still. And through that you can rework the currency system, we do have to remember this is DnD and this is NWN2, and there are limitations Vs. PnP.

In defense for the DM's and Staff, I would have to say this would be a large and somewhat tedious undertaking--as awesome as it would be. To even consider a new currency system, the whole market would have to go through a HUGE change. That, and the possibility of finding those who would be willing to create a Hak pak that created that currency system...I think it is going pretty far. So much as I would love to have an actual Iron, Silver, Stag (ISS) system, I would have to be against it due to the amount of side work DM's/Admins/Builders/Scripters would have to do.

K'narth: The True-Neutral Barbarian of Helm. All body, no brains...or does he? "K'narth bes Helmet!" "Farewell byes!" Guess not.

Johnathan Dalrun: Holy Knight of Kelemvor, Good looking womanizer, and sarcastic meatshield--now lying in the Necropolis, dead as a doornail.

I too think it's a whole lot of effort to work against gameplay mechanics for so little gain towards the betterment of the server. It's like Saulus (I think?) said about our characters' levels: we're like under half of the level we have when putting ourselves in parallel to the Forgotten Realm lore, because real level 15s are often leaders of a whole nation. We just imagine that we -are- known adventurers (or whatever you are), but nowhere as much the cream of the crop as the heroes of the FR lore.

So yeah, we just have to imagine our 1000 stags budget is much more reasonnable than the truth.
