  • Performance/lag- What can be done from my end?

I was just curious if all of the microsoft applications in the services tab of msconfig need to run, or if there are some I can shut down so I am not sending any of that "dead info" that GBX has been talking about. I am running windows XP.

As far as I know when you crash your IP keeps sending data, casusing a mass loop.. Thats what GBX was saying... If your comp can play NWN2 with np then you realy dont need to shut down progs

right, I have just been getting a lot of crashes lately and I didn't know if it was something being caused at my end. I guess "performance" wasn't the proper word for the thread title.

Not using WSAD Or click and drag reduces lag, and closing all other programs would be helpful too, i believe. Also, Fast internet helps, if your using dial-up, i think GBX said it makes the server lag more. Soo, yeah, having another game on while playing on the server can cause a bit of lag i believe.

We're currently in the process of creating a sort of protection measure against flooding. Basically, flooding the server will result in a temporary IP ban from our end. This should expire in 10 minutes.

Be advised that the server will simply reject connections, not use the nwn2 ban packets... Or at least I think so

No, I'm not using WASD movements or using click&drag. I do however occasionally use a small movement with WASD for IC RP purposes. I've never crashed or lagged from that, are those OK to use to make small steps once in a while?

I would think so--but using it for regular movement I'd assume no.
                Characters:

Tiberias Laylonar: Ranger of the Viridale, Woodsman of the Cormanthor, Stalker of Sundren, Hunter of Illusk, Strider of the Wood, Tracker of many means, and Rugged womanizer--on a short chain.

K'narth: The True-Neutral Barbarian of Helm. All body, no brains...or does he? "K'narth bes Helmet!" "Farewell byes!" Guess not.

Johnathan Dalrun: Holy Knight of Kelemvor, Good looking womanizer, and sarcastic meatshield--now lying in the Necropolis, dead as a doornail.

I know personnaly that reducing my view distance in the Graphics option (the distance at which the fog and skyboxes appear away from you) greatly helps my computer performance in some of the heavier areas in Sundren (which surprisingly are less-visited places).

I noticed last night large groups of people logging out, then all immediately logging back in. I'm not sure if they lost connection and were coming back...but it seemed to make it worse since the server had to constantly process 10-15 people coming in simultaneously.

That issue was thoroughly explained by GBX here:

I remember that post, yes. My point is, that voluntarily logging out and then back in if you're lagging is not going to make the problem better...if people are actually doing that, I don't know.
