I think the new weather effects are great and all but...lately it's been really lagging hard. I've also noticed that the server seems to crash more lately.

Any chance the thunder, lightning, and rain is causing it?

    Just curious.

Im not sure about it causeing lag myself but I do know the past three times its flashed lighting, my game has crashed.

...does this mean I need to get a new graphics card?

Or you may want to turn down your settings as dynamic lights/shadows which are suddenly rendered and immediately destroyed when lightning strikes could very well be the cause. Crashes like that are nearly 100% client related.

I've noticed a large lag spike whenever there is the periodic server wide character save.

That's normal when a few dozen characters are being saved, we are probably going to disable server side character saves.

And any lag we've had lately has been because of people flooding us with invalid data that we've had to IP block.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Because of the new weather effect, you will disable server character save, and expect the players to disable some graphic effects?

This effects me in particular as I enjoy making movies from my experience from the game.

The new weather effects seems quite dominate, together with the people who run it.

yeah the only other server I played on back in ye olden NWN1...the only auto save was upon completion of rest..and they had a rest limit set to about 8 minutes real time once you reached lvl 6..much like here I believe.

They also had a use per day item to manually save, much like the DMFI menu when you right click your character. Honestly, with those 2 options available theres no excuse to not keep your character's up to date without constant auto saves, and it will take a lot of stress off the server.

                  Wow, learn to read.

The auto save has a ton of data it writes for 30 some people every hour, which cases about a 3 - 4 second delay on the server. We're disabling this.

The LAG that has been happening has been from an influx of new people that have either bad hardware or bad network and cause the server to flood them. NONE OF THE LAG has anything to do with weather. If you have VISUAL lag where your FPS are down during weather, try turning your graphics settings down.

The weather takes absolutely no CPU time to execute.

Im pretty sure it saves when you enter a different transition anyways, or so i've been told, so i don't see any use of the autosaving.

Well, players loved to sit around camp fires all the time, not moving. So I figured "Why not save every so often?" Doesn't matter now though.
