  • A question about running

    My question is about running and RP, Last night i was told by someone that its not realistic for me to run while out in the wilds all the time. Well, i admit running around towns or such is kinda strange, but we have all seen the moives like conan , LOTR and so on, we are heros for god sakes in a fantasy world, the two moives i said above the characters RAN EVERWHERE and the orcs in LOTR ran for miles and miles. So, my little rant (its very little) is if ya want someone to walk everywhere then go for it, but if we are in the wildes why not run? we dont have horses in game. Just my two coins. i can understand not running in caves and such but in the open of the outside? i just dont get it

    ok done rantting.

    have i said how much i love it here

    If you wish to reference LOTR, you forget the wide open scenes were the entire crew is just walking on the edge of a grass covered mountain while the epic music is going on in the background.

    As for the orcs you opt to reference, you've only seen them chase down some fools for taking a ring. Do you know what they do in their free time? I sure as heck don't. Probably walk for all we know.

    And from a logical view, who has the bloody stamina to run everywhere? Unless you have a constitution of Gods, I don't see how it is even feasible to run up and down, left and right, to and fro without stopping and catching your breath.

    You don't run everywhere in real life, do you? Further, do you even know how heavy and restricting the armor is your character wears?

    To me? Common sense to walk every where before you go into a battle. Don't want to be exhausted before the fight.

      I don't get it - what's the suggestion? Also, try running for 'miles and miles' in real life. Tired? Having a cardiac arrest? Dehydrated? Running with a 50 pound suit of armour on you and a full pack will make even the strongest man tired. "Yes, but this is not Life & Realism, it's Dungeons & Dragons" - used the argument myself, doesn't always hold up.

      Running everywhere in the wilds doesn't make sense from any perspective as you're less alert, are tired when you finally do engage an enemy, and you're making a bunch of noise and visual signals to alert someone to your position. Walking, you're quieter, can view your surroundings better, are more attentive and won't be fatigued when you enter combat.

      Running into battle or making a 'tactical retreat' [such as pissing yourself and running away as brave sir Robin did] is feasible.

        Simple rule of thumb I use is if the area is empty of other players then I feel free to run, if other players are about I walk.

          Here's my three issues with running everywhere:

          1) Kills RP, just destroys it. Nobody stops to talk or emote, because they are just running one kill to the next. Horrible practice for RP'ing.

          2) Full Plate, Yeah, running is fun, now run with 50 extra pounds on your back and mobility inhibiters. Okay, yeah, you're starting to wish your group would walk.

          3) I don't DM for groups who run everywhere cuz I can't even setup plots before they would run into them. They're faster than I can click, so if I see groups just running, and not talking or anything, I go findsomeone who's walking and taking in sundren and start plots for them. And for Vekin's post, yeah, I'd ignore peopel who are alone and running too.

            Moving this to general discussion as this isn't a suggestion, especially considering the OP finished the post with "ok done rantting."
            The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

              I have four thoughts:

              1. Walking is essential in a DM'd game to give the DM time to arrange things;
              2. Walking is helpful when RPing in a group and working your way through an area to give people time to interact;
              3. Running makes sense when you're alone, or when your group is migrating to a new destination to continue RP; and
              4. Chastising someone for running instead of walking if it doesn't actually impact or effect the game (say for example, short hops while waiting for walkers/talkers) is a little over the top.

                    As a player, my main issue is that running kills RP in groups, there's no time to talk as all you can do is click to keep up. Yeah, you can kill all them beasties quicker, but it's much more fun if you can pass comments about it as well . And unless there's some RP reason to hurry ("Charge", "flee", "we need to get to point X before thing Y happens") then it just ruins the vibe. Never underestimate the importance of the vibe!

                      Sheesh - I can't even keep up sometimes with folks walking, let alone running. I type bads and slowishly. I find walking...peaceful...

                        i like to run everywhere when no one is watching, and sometimes when they are. i know its not good for rp, but it just feels like a waste of time in rl just watching your character walk sometimes. i want to get to one place to another faster so i can have fun doing more interesting things other than watching my character walk. but for the sake of rp i try not to do it too much when im interacting with other ppl.

                            Walk with people, run when alone. Can't see the point in walking when you are on your own just to feel like "ooh I'm roleplaying."

                              It's nice to see people accept the logical way of running rather than the "If you run, you will be banned". Not everyone has the unlimited amount of time that they can spend all day walking everywhere.
