What is that little special roleplaying trick you do? What is it that makes your personality just a little extra fleshed out? What have other players done that really stand out to you? What are the worst roleplaying tricks you have seen?

Please, discuss what you think makes a great roleplayer, or what makes an awful roleplayer. Share your do's and dont's here.

Posted elsewhere, but to me, putting forth effort makes good Role Player to me. You don't have to have the biggest vocabulary, spell the best, best grammer, or tpye out a paragraph emote. You just have to show, through effort, that you like what you are doing.

      Good post! Here is mine..

Playing your character. There are individuals who will play their character until a DM event comes around.. then they will join the bandwagon.

When I DM'd here i would sometimes give more xp to the character who had a good RP reason NOT to join my quest ,when the opportunity arised, than the people who did the quest . I did this once in awhile because I thought it was awesome when someone wouldn't join my quest based on their characters alignment or beliefs.

It is a tough thing to do if your a player with not alot of time on your hands and you wanna join a quest. But my advice to those people are.. play a character that is very flexible. *shrugs* Not anyones fault that another doesn't have alot or no time to play on here . That is a different subject .

Also.. playing stats as well.. I remember seeing characters with like 10 charisma.. who had their own friggin guild.. *shakes his head* that maybe a personal opinion of mine.. but when a player who might be very "charismatic" in real life.. takes their 10 charisma character and has him lead large ass groups or guilds is kinda.. "eh" in my book.

I also see players.. play down their character stats as well for example: a character with a high wisdom having absolutely no common sense whatsoever. hahaha.. I won't get into that nor explain more on it.

These are just my opinions by the way on what i see in Good RP.. Thats really it.. Play stats and character .. pretty simple.. :P

I tend to fancy the nice grammar and people who really put some effort into what they're writing. I myself are not that good on neither grammer nor spelling, but atleast I try. And I gotta say tghat I really dislike when people are writing I as "i" and "Hello there!" as "hello there". Not having captials in the start of your sentence looks just ridicoulus.
RP doesn't have to be fast, it's better to take some time when you have the opportunity to really think about how your character would act and respond. That's why I also fancy having italic instead of -Word- when your character is marking that word while saying it.

On emotes, I don't like the standrad *nods* and *shakes head*, since I think they are really unpersonal. When RP has to go fast, like the in heat of battle or something the like, then they would be all ok. But as long as there's time to write more properly, then I really enjoy RPing with characters who acctually thinks what they're writing through.

That's some of my belives. So..
        DO:
-Take time to think what your character acctually is saying an thinking
-Please and ye again please, atleast use a big "I" when typing and pretty pleast use capitol in the start of a sentence
-Give some flavour to your emotes. *He nods slightly* or *He nods* is muuuch better than *Nods*

        Dont's:
        -Rush when typing
-Type alot OOC, sine that ruins the feeling that might've been built up.
-Do rolls if your character has no RP reason to do so, or just because "everyone else is rolling and I want to see what they're seeing"

Just my two cents, and I have to add that I don't despite players which doesn't do like I've explained what I think is good RP, I know alot of people here are good rolepalyers and still they write "hello i am marek nice to meet you".
I have a +1 question brewing in this skull somewhere...

Acronyms. I hate people who use them while roleplaying. Were it up to me, I'd put a boot-on-"lol" mechanism in place on the server.

Something I've found to be of great value to roleplayers: Know when not to say anything. The DM's do see what you write, and, while it is not always responded to, there really is no reason to say "Hello!" 5 times.

Oh, and get in the head of your character. Would the sudden appearance of an Umber Hulk scare you shitless if you were in your chraracters shoes? Then there's a good chance he'll be scared as well. Fighting is not always the only option.

I love when people play their race, class, allignment, and character. I find that a lot of times, people don't really play their character the way they should and just run around and act as if they are in a mall or downtown park. Be haughty all the time if that is your character. Be holy and wise if that is your character. If you hate a certain race or class, then hate them all the time.......you don't have to attack them physically, but you can certainly attack them verbally, which could provide some very intertaining RP.

I play an elven bard.....not a powerhouse, but I have certain prejudices and I display them all the time, sometimes very aggressively and sometimes with more sublety. Anyone, that is all I would stress, really play your character the way they would be.

The way I play my char depends on my mood that day, if I wan't to be alone for a while I'll go fishing or I'll do something alone. If I feel like talking I'll sit around the camp and talk, etc...
Also I like my chars to be silly and intelligent at the same time so that they seem excentric.

I like it when other chars don't automatically want to be my friends just because we crossed paths and said hello. I like when chars are rude to others when they first meet if they are evil or just don't like the other guy.

I don't like memory loss in a char, like when a new char comes up and they say that they used to be a really strong knight or wtv before coming to sundren but they had a terrible accident that caused memory loss and now they are noobs again.

Another thing that annoys me is clone chars, like chars that look the same have the same skills or classes and are always hanging out with the same people almost exclusively.

A little piece of advice, when you log off don't log off while you are near a hang out spot like a camp, log off near a transition area so that the next time you log in you don't just pop up in the middle of a large group of people. It sucks when a char appears out of nowhere.

When ever I play a Character, I like to play one who differs from the cut-out-to-be-a-hero type.

Having a phobia, weakness or oddity is a good jump off for role playing. One should be wary though, not to make it too though to interact socially with other players.

I really hate when people meet each other for the first time and they're super friendly in a dangerous area. Like the necropolis. If you see somone inside there, and your there as well, seeing as your first instinct is to be on gaurd and attack the dark advent members, how the heck do you know that this guy isnt evil either? Same thing with areas with bandits.. Some dude with leather armor and a bow approaches you in bandit territory, he'd most likely be a bandit. Instead people give them a friendly "Hi" And "want to join me with killing bandits?!" And SBG is right about creating groups. People with 10 CHA are not fit to run a group...

Hmm...off the top of my head one thing that irks me to no end is when people are around the campfire talking, someone comes running in weapons drawn bumping every player on their way to spam the chat full of what the miners and what Sergeant Grayham say. I know everything is like WOW when your a new player and you get on to look around, was there myself a few weeks back but its a common courtesy to do that kind of stuff when other PCs arnt haveing a talk there.

For myself i like to see something diffrent stand out about a character. That makes me pay more attention to them and remember them. Even if its small like, being near void of emotion, twitching, their attitude on how they talk. I think a big thing here that helps people is them trying to stand out, even at lvl 3. More people know you, more interaction, more chances to group up for things = better playing experence.
Sacrifice everything as the final darkness falls... in the end, all that awaits you is death. Only then will you understand - you've been following in my footsteps all along.
So come then, you heroes! Come in all your power and glory! For in the final hour, all must serve the one... true... king.

Narrow minded interpretations of ability scores is a pet peeve of mine as is not realizing how your scores interact. Charisma is by far the worst as far as this goes. I cannot begin to tell you how many low charisma characters I have seen over the years who all fall into the mold of physically ugly or sheep-like follwers. Low charisma can manifest simply as being socially ill adjusted somehow. And think about your other stats...are you smart or wise? If so then your character probably recognizes his weakness and acts accordingly, avoiding social situations or being very careful about what they say, or concealing their scars or physical deformities.

Wisdom is another offender. If you have low wisdom, then you likely aren't necessarily unperceptive...intelligence plays into this too. But knowing what to do with your knowledge is a whole other thing...remember intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit but wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad (I wish I could remember who said that). On the flip side wise people often are able to figure things out that normally they wouldn't be expected to becasue they lack intelligence. Typically they learn from experience. If you get wacked by a troll because you forgot to bring fire, that doesn't mean that next time you meet a troll with a your party your dullard of a character will forget that you need fire to kill a troll. No, your mentally challanged but wise character may very well have learned something from experience...

Strength, Dexterity and Constitution are by far the easiest stats to play IMHO. No need to make constant skill checks, the game takes care of that for you with the weight limit you can carry, fortitude and reflex saves.

My advice is have common sense. You can have no info on FR, or have ever rp'd before, but if you have common sense, you'll probably do better than everyone who DOES have those things.
