  • Discussion - RP Rating System

With NWN2 we get the ability to add alot of functionality never before possible in NWN1 thanks to the UI system. One function we've discussed as developers is RP Rating of players.

Basically, players would be able to select another player, post a rating and some notes why they believe the player deserves the rating they give. Players would then be able to see their own ratings like they can see other personal info, but DMs could review the notes and see how players are interacting. And players can see what sort of rate they are getting from others. Possibly see the notes left behind by players.

What do you think about this concept?

Would be good way to help people get better rping if they are new to it or such. Also personally its allways nice to see nice things about yourself. Comments made though should be eather praise or offering suggestions on how to improve. Im not saying people here would but its a possiblity some might write nasty things, and thats counter productive. But i like the idea
Sacrifice everything as the final darkness falls... in the end, all that awaits you is death. Only then will you understand - you've been following in my footsteps all along.
So come then, you heroes! Come in all your power and glory! For in the final hour, all must serve the one... true... king.

That sounds really neat, one thing I'd like to add is a way for players to post their own notes on themselves for DM's to read. Although we do have the help forum for such things, I imagine it gets crowded there and DM's can't remember every little thing and it could make things easier for player's to keep a small snippet of whatever they feel would be most important for a DM to know.

Maybe a single personal note you can update like a description would be fine. I'm reluctant to see a bunch of notes players post about themselves one after another

As long as other players cant see each others rp ratings, im fine with the idea. Annd, im hoping that DM's wont use rp rating as a way to pick who they should dm for or reward...

Seems like a bad idea to me, would promote elitism and favouritism, and probably add to the online population suffering from 'rp-snooty-elf Syndrome'. DM's can see how the pc's are interacting by being DM's.... on that note, would the players be able to post their ratings about the quality of DM'ing?

Eh, It may not be the case as you think Aux.
The RP system can show DMs just who can handle certain situations better, and while that means that the DMs will not throw only the good events at the players with higher ratings, it will effect just what the DM will throw at them (i.e. a Person with a lower score really will not be that much of a major player in a heated debate between a DM-controlled- wizard and said player about the effects of the Chult jungle heat on undead constructs, and yes. These events are very much plausible *not every player seeks confrontation in every event*)
Personally I am all for the RP ratings, if only as a means to show just where I am and what I need to do to improve. The only way we all can go is up.

Based off of previous experience, I tend to agree with Aux. Also, isn't it all opinion anyways? I might really love the RP style of someone, while 70% of the server hates it. Does that really mean that that person is a that bad? And how does that translate into anything?

I think it would turn into a sort of popularity rating system if you ask me.

                Jaded, I know. Blame society.

I opened it up for discussion on purpose to see how players would react.

I see your point, dashminus, but I cannot bring myself to agree with it if GBX intends to make the script available only to the players eyes. (Is this what you intend to do, GBX?)

Also, at the very least, a comment system, even a thread dedicated to RP appraisal/improvement would still be nice.

So then what? When I log in and see that 10 people hate my roleplaying style, but I feel I am okay, what is that doing to help me other than make me feel even worse around people? I think I might even become more of an introvert if I see what I feel is my best isn't working for people.

*shrugs* Either way. Even though I don't like the idea, it is just my opinion. I like that the staff is willing to consider ideas to help make this server a better place. *applauds* the effort. I can't say it enough. A wonderful world you have crafted.

Alright, you seem to miss the point that I am trying to make here:

In the Literary Magazine that I happen to be the Editor-in-chief for we get tons (I wish >_>) of submissions from the other students. We have yet to simply tell them that we hate their writing then reject their pieces. What we do is offer constructive comments on the piece and tell that what should be improved and what we like.

Now how does this pertain to this topic? I would like for people to offer constructive criticism which does not boil down to "O wow, you are so good" or "You suck." If you think the person sucks, then tell them why you think so. And keep these reasons as un-bias as possible.

And if you are too soft/attached to your characters to recieve constructive criticism, then I really must wonder why you would play on-line where you interact with tons of people who may/may not like what your mind spawns. (NOTE! I am not saying that any of us are soft/too attached.) I hardly think this is the case with many on the forums, and if so, then I would rather that these people not be here.

Once again, the only place we all can go is up, and someone who is too attached to what they manage to think of is only dooming themselves as they cannot improve as well as they could if they did accept criticism.

The rating system should be positive in someway.. not negative. Perhaps if someone wants to vote on another they can. But I don't think people rating another person on RP skillz with constructive criticizm will work. People will get offended. It is fact people will get offended no matter how nice you say it. Not saying ALL just generally speaking.. Let me say that again.. NOT ALL.. just generally speaking.

Should just be for someone who saw some really cool RP from another and give them a GOLD STAR! maybe a cookie.

Im a powergamer so i shouldn't get any.. maybe ghetto bootie points.

                            Booo! Powergamer!

But that aside (still boo), how about we make it optional? If you feel secure enough you open yourself to criticism, if not then you do not!
