  • A Discussion of Faiths?

I'm just curious, and haven't seen anything like this in my times posted up here. Every character in the Forgotten Realms setting is more or less defined by their personality, their class... and their deity. In a setting where a lack of faith means never rising from the dead, and being added to a shiftless wall of immaterium in the Fugue Plane -as well as having very active, often very ANGRY gods - faith is a strong motivator in a lot of actions.

    SO!

Without mentioning specifics, to avoid potential metagaming knowledge, which god(s) do your character's usually end up following?

Personally, my characters run the gamut (since I have so many of them), but my most active characters fall into the darker spectrums. Velsharoon, Gargauth, Malar, Shar... Some reverent, some plotting, some outright hunting or insane. And if your character is heavily religion-inclined, do you intend to take part in important religious events, such as rituals, attendances, or (for us darker people) promoting secret societies, and subverting opposing faiths?
    Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

    Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

While I could do a character of just about any god, my characters usually run either neutral-with-lawful-tendencies or downright lawful, so I run the gamut of gods that also lean in that direction. Torm is a special favorite of mine, as is Gargauth, and I have a special place in my heart for Tyr, Helm, and a bunch of the other typial paladin gods. Notably excepting Bane, because Bane is stupid.

I lurvvies and enjoy religious events of all kinds, and one of my favorite events ever was Fury's meeting of the Triumvirate, followed by a quest to sanctify a crypt. Stock stuff in principle, but it's evocative and is so rarely done well. And characters discussing religion is a barrel of monkeys, in a fun way. ^_^

My primary oddball / exception has been a bard of Sharess who followed Torm for a while during a war, and is NG with lawful tendencies. She sees it as her solemn duty to bring pleasure to everyone, and she was a lot of fun to play.
Adama who was once called Adama Hrakness, sacred paw of Mielikki

Lihana Farrier, Paladin of Torm and noble dalliance

On Hold: Alandriel Ward, Actually a Vampire Groupie
Retired for Good: Tamryn Jorandur, Hano's Wife and Conflicted Soul

Depends on the character for me. My Druid is generally a Pacifist, so her worship tends toward Eldath. A lot of my other characters gravitate toward Tyr or Fenmarel Mestarine. And Lolth every once in awhile, the couple of times I've played an evil Drow. I usually end up choosing one of these four, but I've chosen others occasionally.

I am a fan of enlightenment and knowledge, so monks or wizards tend to be my favorite class to play in truth. Gods in FR are too clearly defined to me and it loses the inner conflict that real world churches suffered over the ages. I mean, it's hard to have conflicting sects when a god can just come down and say "You're doing it wrong." The lack of any real mystery in the divine with FR gods makes them all a yawn to me. Monks, however, you can have more fun with in that sense, since you unlock chi and enlightenment ^_^

Although, if I had to choose, I've got the hots for Lolth. She gives the term "Fear will keep them in line" a whole new meaning when it comes to Drow. She's like the evil that seems one step ahead of your plans, and I had alot of fun DM'ing Drow on Sundren because of it. When the matron walked in, nobody really knew what was about to happen.

Yeah, like Drow society and Lolth. Only thing I wish for Drow society is it was nobles and commoners instead of women and men that set the difference.

Loviatar is the deity of both of my characters because I just love Role-playing a character that enjoys pain/believes pain, suffering, agony, etc. to be the things that make the world go round! Though not all of them are staunch followers, and others have personality conflicts with this deity of choice..?

                        Silvanus. Manipulatively neutral Silvanus.

                        And sometimes Chauntea I guess.

Most of my characters' deities revolve around the lawful and/or evil categories, as I have a fondness for the Archdevils and ironfists like Helm. The elemental gods also receive their fair share of character creation love from me (namely Kossuth), and I find the druids/rangers they breed to be fantastic!

well I got to admit I am a Shar fan for gods. I admire me some Bhaal too(MINDLESS SLAUGHTER).

But Jag is an Umberlean (I know surprise he follows anyone) and it suites him well. Insane goddess with random merciful and destructive tendencies. That's Jag right there.
