I resent all of this disparaging of the Thayans. You will all be hearing from some bald lawyers for this scandalous libel!

I would personally like to see just no old characters, not even elves or what have you as NPCs. Let people post the story of how their character met their heroic end or abandoned Sundren to its fate and let that be that. I really want a clean slate, and would rather there not be any lingering baggage, even in NPC form.

Then that should mean people probably shouldn't be descendants either.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

I like this idea... Specifically as it applies to NPCs. Clean start.
                  Cheers!

Aye, I know Vaults were installed around the globe to keep Nukes from getting in, but in this case ... NUKE THE VAULT!

The fewer NPCs we have to put into the world, the simpler our devs' lives will be. However, it is not likely that everyone will be gone and forgotten. The time jump is not so severe that the echoes of your characters would not be heard. Keep in mind how often people still conjure up World War II stuff and that was 70 years ago. We don't want to live in the past either though, so while those echoes may be heard to focus will be on the present (which is right now's future.)

Very much in agreement there. Players are free to have their characters spin tales about the heroes of old, but not because they're direct blood descendants. The tales should also be a lot more colorful than what actually happened. People never remember things the same way a few weeks after an event, much less decades.

Also, keep in mind, this is coming from someone who would really like to keep playing their current characters. But I think it would be best for the server if I didn't.

As for 'retirement-like rewards', I wouldn't have any objections to that, as long as they were minor. Something cool like a unique item with the old character's name (or just being allowed to keep such a retirement item if you already have one).

But it should be a curiosity or trinket rather than something that can create a huge power gap. No more people running around with swords that do +3d8 of various elemental damage while the rest of us are restricted to 1d4 please

One of the things I've always found irksome about Sundren as a relatively new player is the current retirement/reward program. In my mind, retirement rewards should boost the new PC along their path, but never prop them up to a place where an ordinary PC could never catch up.

The specific example in Sundren's case is the permanent stat boost granted to the higher tier rewards. XP, gold, and custom items are great, and things that any PC can earn in time, but there is simply no way to catch up to a permanent stat boost (and no, it wasn't minor. It made the difference between having EDM or not in many builds).

Those are my thoughts on what makes for good rewards vs. bad rewards, but all of that said, I think Sundren would only hurt itself by not starting everyone out at the same point: tabula rasa.

There will be no tangible rewards handed out as a general rule. Everyone is losing their characters, so everyone will be starting at the same base line.

That said, I could count on one hand the number of players that got a stat increase as a result of retiring an epic level character, which needed to be level 22 or above.

Further, as the level cap drops, these retirement rewards will likely change, in amount and required level.

EDM is always viable in every build and don't let anyone tell you different.
