  • Question Re: Law Enforcement

So, who is in charge right now? Still the Legion?

Who is normally in charge when they are not? What are they doing at the moment then? Since there has been such a long period of martial law aren't they practically unemployed now? Are the City Watch all sitting around tavern fires reminiscing about their glory days?

    Thanks!

The city watch was, and still is, a part of the Legion. The 5th Legion are responsible for maintaining law and order within Sundren City itself, the other remaining legions have control of their own areas.

Outside of the city things get a little dicey, technically the Legion still have control, but without the forces around to actually enforce the word of law they may or may not be listened to.

The other towns (Avanthyr, Mirakus, Aquor) have local militias or private forces that protect the locals and enforce local laws. They may also process and punish criminals depending on the offence. Technically the Legion would be able to wander in and be the big bad feds, but again that's a little dicey.

Sestra is a little special in that as a town occupied by the black hand it isn't connected to the legions chain of command, though obviously the legion like to think it's still theirs and that their law still applies.

What about Aquor? I would think that City is pretty unique. Let's not forget the role of Nobility. They, traditionally, protect their own lands and people. Of course, the Nobles here are ingrained heavily into the ruling power structures (Meriadoc at the Port, Hellstrom at Exigo/ Mirakus Post, Aurelianus/ Ulsteris/ Blackwell/ LaCroix with the Legion).

It's my understanding that a Noble can just kill a person for trespassing. This is not an admission of guilt, by the way. I'm just adding to the conversation. :-)

Nobility, churches, essentially it's whoever has got the money, power and influence to govern an area that governs it. Tommy twocoppers getting killed by lord loadsacash's goons while trying to break into the stables really won't raise eyebrows, nor would killing someone of whatever status during a fairly witnessed duel. Being rich as a rich thing wouldn't get you off of killing random people in the street (beating them up is another matter, especially if they did something like offend you, your friends, your horse or gave other socially acceptable excuse for a beating) unless said noble was super confident that they had enough sway over everyone to get away with it.

Also keep on mind their are many elements of justice and law that are faith represented. Sure Kenny Goldpants didn't get anything more than a fine from the courts after he blinded Begged Bob 'accidentally' with his riding crop, but beyond the law of men is the law of the gods, Bobs meth buddies could seek out some helmite or tyrian justice, or they could even seek out a hoarite to exact some litteral 'eye for an eye' justice.

As for Aquor, it does have a couple of fairly unique points, not the least of which is the Thayan Enclave, a place that is sovereign Thayan territory. Fighting over the town is one thing, but anyone even thinking about taking military action against the thayan enclave itself probably hasn't thought out the consequences. Overall though Aquor fits the mold, single authority providing law and order for its inhabitants in lieu of the central or noble powers. That could all change though as groups flex muscle and threaten war over who gets to be king of that particular castle.

Avanthyr is probably the one to watch for implosion next, a lot of powerful chefs in one small kitchen each with grand ideas in differing directions.

Your horse, ser, is an affront to horses everywhere! I would call it a runt of a pony but 'twould be an injustice to runt ponies of the Realms, who are without exception far more majestic creatures than your steed!

Especially if the guy is a Paladin and you're insulting his bonded mount? Might as well sign your last will for the inevitable duel death.

Interestingly enough, I had a lengthy RP discussion where Byrun spoke about not being particularly fond of horses. That being said, that doesn't mean some piss ant peasant can just come up and insult the beast. He has to be beat, at least on principle.

People sure can get irrationality attached to their horses...

Perhaps enough to spend nosebags full of gold on ale for their horse? *makes a note*

I think Byrun is afraid of horses. >.> Mind you, if he had one like this, I think it wouldn't be such an issue:

Yea. That thing looks like it could plow over some Helmites.

Helmites are documented to be the cavalry of Sundren, hoss.

Within the first few hours of the skirmishes the bodies of the dead were already growing thick as the helmite heavy cavalry demolished any semblance of resistance the Myrkulites could rouse against their foes.
Probably got that horse out of the temple stables. Could be Esmond's old war steed, even. Oh, wait, I forgot - he rides one of these into battle. Ah, well. I'm sure they can lend you one if you fancy.
Hellstrom has the gold to buy a few stallions, right? And at least you can still always ride over Legion infantry.
"Sir, we're surrounded!" "Excellent! Now we can attack in any direction."
