Just thinking, throughout the different versions of Dnd there have been several different takes on Lycanthropes and alignment and was wondering which system we are planning to follow (since it seems some Lycanthropes have come to Sundren recently)
Lycanthropes are split into two main groups:
Natural Lycanthropes
They were born a Lycanthrope, have full control over their change and can change from one form to another freely at will. It seems that in all editions of Dnd this group has free choice of alignment anywhere from LG to CE depending on how they were raised.
Infected Lycanthropes
Have contracted the curse via being bitten by a Lycanthrope. They cannot control their change and will change involuntarily on a full moon (for wolves anyway, not sure about the other types). Changing back requires a Con check or Will save or both.
They are unaware of their condition since they have no memory of the time in which they were changed, and can only guess based on clues like waking up in woods naked covered in blood and whatnot. In some versions of Dnd their alignment shifts to CE/LE (depending on animal type?) whilst in animal or hybrid form. In other versions they shift to True Neutral, as a normal animal of that type.
When not in animal/hybrid form people seem to have differing opinions on what alignment should be, though in my game we ruled that you could keep your original alignment so long as you didn't know you were a lycanthrope, or did your best to prevent the carnage by chaining yourself up on full moons etc.
Just wondering what kinda system we're playing by here, thanks!
