  • OOC emotes

I get that people don't like other people, but can role play stay IC. The insulting emotes that tell your characters thoughts, when they are really just insulting the other player not the character, are unnecessary.

If you don't like someone maybe just don't RP with them. It is what I would do.

Emotes describe what your character is doing, not what your character is thinking. If you're crossing that line, you're doing it wrong. It's a huge turnoff.

"Larry sneers at the stupid bard's ignorance"

You mean like this? Urgh this is a pet hate of mine!!

Try something like "Larry sneers at the Bard and regards him with a look of clear disdain"

I agree! It's very insulting when people take IC things OOC or harbor OOC anxiety against other players, especially when it reflects IC or actually rolls to other players! What a mess.

As it has been stated in other various threads, people can choose who they want to RP with and who they don't, but I think it's just bad form when a player who dislikes a player is in a large group of players and utterly disregards that other character; more-so when that players is trying to RP with those around them. =)

I like those words, Utterly Disregard, when used together. Yet it has to be more descriptive.

How is that character 'Utterly Ignoring' or 'Utterly Disregarding' that person? What makes them do this? What motivation is it if they don't even know the faintest thing about that PC?

People should just be more descriptive, for others sake, even if wanting to harshly ignore them for childish reasons =)

*She glances away from the Balor, focusing her attention on her sweet bunny familiar at her feet. Trying to draw her attention from the frightful situation in an attempt to utterly ignore the fearful presence.*

        Like that would work! =P

Shadechild, your character walks around dressed like a hoe, invisible and in general is an open supporter of bad guys and or bad behavior. Why would you expect my cleric of Torm to do anything else but ignore your character?

You RP Vivian fantastically, and I actually like your armor OOCly by the way! I can see that the emote of my character ignoring your character insulted you OOCly. It was an IC gesture. However, in the future I will simply have my character just not respond rather then let you know my character is ignoring your character ICly. I just thought not responding was kind of rude . I am sorry! I will work on it!

Ps. This post was actually not directed at any single person. I have seen tons of people do the ooc emotion in their writing and I just wanted things to be friendlier.

I'm torn by this thread. I feel like a PSA about this sort of thing is useful, but not as useful as directed tells in-game might be. Because now I find myself asking "Well, shit...have I done that?" So in the sense that I would be more self-conscious this is useful. If I am not guilty of this and am now checking, it's another level of self-correction going in, slowing down my response times.

I once had a player tell me "You are the worst kind of role-player, I hate the way you act!" Despite the negativity and heat/passion in a statement like that, I think it is good to get feedback. That player and I mended bridges later and it's all water under the bridge now, but I would like to be TOLD if I am acting in a manner that upsets people. I think it's tricky to be an antagonist to characters without antagonizing players, but most of the people I fight with the most IC are people I laugh the hardest with OOC, so it is doable.

While I'm sure Fuzzie isn't attacking anyone directly, I think more direct confrontation in-game might work more efficiently. If someone does something that grinds your gears, maybe address it with him/her in calm, cool manner before it becomes something that makes you snap and fly off the handle? Pro-tip guys, this is also the best way to prevent your wife from stabbing you in your sleep over a pet peeve....communication!
I can't slow down, I can't hold back though you know I wish I could. No there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good!

This is always a somewhat fuzzy issue for me (no pun intended). I have a hard time conveying subtler facial expressions without resorting to emotes like 'A somewhat puzzled, somewhat amused expression.' I guess the difference is that it's still conveying only what can be perceived, and I pretty much trust others to choose correctly whether their characters could identify that expression correctly or not.

I am really not trying to attack anyone. This is actually why I made a post. It is not just one person doing it. It could very well be innocent for most people. I just wanted to put it out there not stir things up.

Edit: and I am referring only to overtly hostile emotes like. ( Ignores the idiot) or ( thinks the bard is a dumbass). Stuff like that.

I do have a tendency to *plot "character's name" death*. That's mainly as a joke when there's a lull. I try not to break immersion and I'm working on trying to limit it down to next to nothing.

There is a difference between *looks at the stupid bard* and *looks at the bard like he's stupid*.

On a similar note... I wouldn't mind fewer pop culture/ modern references during RP.

I'm just going to say for the record, that I've created a lot of bad luck in the past for characters who emote what they're thinking in what I call this 'trollish RP'.

If people want to bring that kind of spite to themselves, HAVE AT IT.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Cmosir, I plot all of your deaths!

Really though Sonuvalich has the right idea. If there is ever an issue, just send a tell. 84% of all arguments are a by product of a misunderstanding. Sometime just asking is a good way.

Hell most of the time I don't know how people RP with me as Datton; He never gives anything away and is for the most part super focused on what he is doing. I am sure I have pissed off other players. So if this has happened to you, just send me a tell (yes I am as evil as my persona in game).

I now feel compelled to RP that Sandro has been cursed by Enchan to have his surface thoughts constantly broadcast to those around him via italicized emote text.
