  • Looting Is an In-character Activity

Per the title, looting is an in-character activity. Expect in-character repercussions if you gank the loot when you're in a party.

This only makes sense. Don't get buttsore if somone hostiles you and give you a sound thrashing for not offering to divvy up the rewards of a quest.

To address this simply, because I know you're targeting me - and it's pretty simple because I know it'll be spread.

Every single group Drake has ever been in - there has NEVER been clarification to loot in any circumstance. Everyone has simply grabbed loot as it occurred and at the end we'd disperse it among ourselves without any question. Its a shame I lost some friends tonight because they simply didn't whisper me "Would you share that?" as I would have gladly - Hell, Drake will give gold to others freely as it's only the right thing to do.

I apologize to everyone that some rules aren't clearly explained until last second and then arguments start over the pettiest of stuff. I'll be sure to keep it IC from this point out.

Quick edit: Not a word was said to me upon picking up the item, it was only throwed up after a few minutes that I apparently ninja'd and ran off. It was NEVER my intention.

I've never had an issue with Drake Ninja looting in a party before, and there are some players who no matter what wont insta grab loot drops as if they are the only one entitled to them. I tend to keep them out of parties and Drake isn't on that list. If it's actually an issue then people need to speak up on it at the time it's looted.

You didn't lose friends drake. But you also didn't disperse it afterward. My tactic in a group is one person picks everything up, preferably someone in a faction, then people say if they want any of the items that pop, and then the faction person sells everything and splits the money evenly.

It's a shame that you put the expectations on the other players to confront you to share the loot if such is actually your intention. Perhaps you can see how running in to snatch up the loot, not offering to share, and leaving the area might give someone else a different perception of your intentions.

Actually, I've already acknowledged my ignorance of the situation and apologized. My expectations of others seems reasonable when 15 - 16 others do the same that I've played with. Of course I see it now - but no - I would not have previous as it was not clearly explained.

Nothing says you need to roll some dice rolls on loot. If you're bent out of shape it didn't happen, that's an OOC reaction.

But you're still held accountable for how you pick things up ICly. If someone gets bent outta shape ICly, it sounds like a good reason to call a character greedy.

I hear some talk about treating this like an MMO, but honestly, it sounds like folks from both sides of the situation might have made that mistake a little bit.

This all seems like a misunderstanding that could have just been solved with those involved rather than needing to run to someone else to intervene.

But the person in question has apologized for any wrong doing, so it seems like this matter can be settled.

No one ran to anyone else to intervene. PCs had in-character reactions to an in-character event that was precipitated by an OOC mindset. I made a PSA reminding people that even looting is an IC activity that will have IC consequences. This is to the benefit of those who think it's acceptable etiquette to just snatch up loot so that they won't be surprised when they get a reputation for being greedy assholes.

Some of my favorite rogues have role played stealing loot and saying they found nothing in an ic way that made 'greedy asshole' enjoyable to watch.

Great men apologize. Thanks for the clarification Lotus.

following that particular vein, looting containers in crypts are in fact, IC graverobbing. (apart from barrels and such, though I heard Doubt buries gnomes in old barrels of grease). Elves among other races abhor graverobbing.

I agree that Elves tend to abhor grave robbing, my Elf does. However, some may not for one reason or another. I may call them on it IC and see what transpires.

As to looting, the best way is to establish the rules at the onset of a dungeon or quest so that there are no misunderstandings.

                            When did looting become IC?

                            Ninja Looting
Ninja looting is defined as following someone else, letting them fight in combat while you pick up all loot right under their nose, keeping it for yourself. This will cost heavy XP deductions if anyone is caught doing so.
We had Ninja looting be considered OOC since the beginning.

We should probably add ninja flagging to the list of OOC looting no-no's.

On more than one occasion I have had ethereal casters bolt past me just to get to a flag.
