  • A simple Crafting Question

The question I have was inspired by this thread, but I did not want to clutter it up with off topic discussion so I made this.

When you craft a new item, or alter an existing item can you change the item's name in any drastic way or are you limited to simply adding modifiers to the item?

Example: Billy Bob the armour smith crafts an Adamantine cod piece of fire resistance. Can Billy Bob name this item something like "Whore Sunderer!!!" or does the engine name the item for him by following preset naming patterns so that you end up with something less interesting like "Adamantine cod piece of Fire"?

Specific quotes that inspired the question are as follows:

Plus it builds some killer story around items. So that even a +2 sonicd4 weapon can be super fun to have.
And in response to that quote, Farmboy wrote:

You can change the entire name. It is not limited to whatever it was before.

Thank you for the quick response!
(I have never used NWN crafting and am totally clueless about how it functions so I really do appreciate your patience.)

The naming option only comes up when you do an actual enchantment. You are not able to rename, say, adamantine breastplate when you craft it, only after you add the fire resistance enchantment.

It should come up when you craft the weapon physically, not enchant it. The worlds are full of too many generic items.

Doesn't enchanting make more sense for unique names? If I make a sword, and dub it "The Incinerator" but then get it enchanted with frost damage it just makes no sense. Or could it change both? Name it when crafted, then rename it if enchanted?

Like Narsil becoming Andúril when reforged by the elves?
I can't slow down, I can't hold back though you know I wish I could. No there ain't no rest for the wicked until we close our eyes for good!

Currently, mundane crafting creates a visually altered version of the base item, where everything else is generic, including name. This goes for everything of the crafting.2da.
When it is Enchanted, it can currently be altered to a different name every time it gets a new modification, including upgrades like+1 to+2. This applies to everything of the enchanting.2da.

I would still choses the named non-enchanted weapon over the generic machine generated one in a shop.

I always end up with 4-5 items with the same name. I have to keep track of them by using the hotbar. So if there's any way to allow naming of an item on creation, that'd be appreciated.

Unfortunately there isn't under the current system. That said... it really is too easy slapping an enchantment on an item to make it a little more personal or customized to your character's RP.

There are a handful of us that can do it in game. Look us up.

                    Cheers!

I mean if a Dev could add it in. But yeah, I'm going to look up a crafter or two who's willing to do a +1 enchantment for my more important clothes.

I've had occasions in the past where asking a DM politely for a simple descriptor is accepted. They can't help you if they don't know what your looking for, but at the same time don't be storming the staff with petty requests.

That being said, +1 enchants can be made silly easily, and I really don't mind making for cheap.

[edit] Heck, during lull months, I chuck enchants into James' gear just to make 'em unique and intersting. X-D
