  • Questions on the Mystic Theurge

Been looking into this class with some interest and have a few questions on it. First and the biggest, with the glitch in selecting new spells as a Favored Soul, Sorcerer, or Spirit Shaman, is it that hard to manage them leveling up? While a combination like Cleric/Sorcerer doesn't seem so bad, I can guess the hassle with a Favored Soul/Sorcerer combo. I imagine it would have to be something like...
    01. Favored Soul 1
    02. Favored Soul 2
    03. Sorcerer 1
    04. Sorcerer 2
    05. Mystic Theurge 1
    06. Mystic Theurge 2
    07. Mystic Theurge 3
    08. Mystic Theurge 4
    09. Mystic Theurge 5
    10. Favored Soul 3
    11. Sorcerer 3
    12. Repeat 5-11
This seems like a real hassle just to get new spells per day for your MT. And as far as actual magical prowess, you'd be pretty much a dead weight for any party during your MT stages. Your spell level may go up, but you only have access up to level 2 on spells until you hit level 10. And then you'd hit another dead spot from level 12 to 17. Is it worth it and/or will this glitch eventually be fixed?

Second, you can only take a maximum of 10 levels in Mystic Theurge, correct? Or is it like some of Kaedrin's PrCs that can go up to 24? While being able to access the full spell list of an arcane and divine class would be awesome, with a caster level stuck in the area of 20, pretty much anyone with a decent epic level dispel and/or spell resistance would render your character's magic rather useless. The class strikes me more as a RP class than a functional spell caster that can compete with others.

Lastly, you have to take one divine class and one arcane class, correct? You can't match the "holy" divine with the "nature" divine. Otherwise I might be very interested in a Cleric/Druid combo for a certain character...

    Thank you for your time.

Stupid phone ate the long reply so your just going to have the short version.

Spontaneous (non bard) spell progression with MT is not a glitch but a deliberate design decision. As such it won't be fixed. Also note that fav soul is a locked class, to get it approved you'll need to make the team, laugh, cry and get all contemplative in equal measure. It's definitely the hardest class to get unlocked.

    The class has 10 levels.

The class requires Arcane + Divine, double Divine will not function.

It seems like a fairly balanced thing that a dual caster will not get acces to level 9 spells. But you'd have a horseload of spells to balance it out.

Previously less feats and slightly lower caster level were the only disadvantages of MT. Now they get just as many feats as pure casters... Lower CL Is their only disadvantage. Take that away and even less would play pure Wiz/sorc.

Also, it seems that they can reach CL 17 in whichever class they focus most in? Meaning they can indeed get 9th level spells.

I've known two ppl who tried, or did actually, lvl a sorc/FS/MT, it was very difficult for both of them but as long as you take a lvl of each of your base classes at the end of your lvl progression you'll get all your spells (this works with any of the spontanious caster combos).

The limitations to the progression of the combo was actually a limitation in the game engine.

Also, if they can lvl far enough to get 9th lvl spells I totally need to re-lvl Seb so he can cast Moar Buffs!!! So little time to play .

I think they can? You only need Wiz3/Clr3 to enter the class according to the update notes, so you should be able to get to CL 17 in whichever class you choose to focus on (probably Wizard/Sorcerer I guess).

              MT requirements:
Spells: Able to cast 2nd-level arcane spells and 2nd-level divine spells.
Sorcerer/FS don't get 2nd level spells til 4th level right?

If you go double spontaneous caster, you're not getting MT until level 9 AFAIK.

              So its...
              01. Sorc 1
              02. Sorc 2
              03. Sorc 3
              04. Sorc 4
              05. FS 1
              06. FS 2
              07. FS 3
              08. FS 4
              09. MT 1
              10. MT 2
              11. MT 3
              12. MT 4
              13. MT 5
              14. MT 6
              15. MT 7
              16. MT 8
              17. MT 9
              18. MT 10
              19. Sorc 5
              20. FS 5

End up with 15 levels of progression in both. (7th level spells in each)

Wow, being a MT is a lot more complicated than I thought. Here I was thinking Sor and FS got access to their second level spells at 2 or 3. And I'm a bit confused on the maximum spell level a MT can reach. If I understood it right, a FS/Sor(/SS) MT would still reach new spell levels but would not be able to actually select those spells until they take one more level in each of their caster classes. So a 10 FS/10 Sor/10 MT would essentially be like dual classing as a FS/Sor to level 20 but only as far as their magic is concerned. And if you took practiced spell caster FS and Sor, your caster level would end up at 24 for each.

That would rely on having access to level 30. And it's hard enough to get to level 21. I don't advise relying on any build of a higher level than that.

I always consider the maximum potential of a character when I'm thinking of a build, no matter how long it may take to reach the pinnacle.
