Sometimes what I've found works to edit otherwise resticted files is as follows:

      Duplicate the file.
      Move the duplicate elsewhere.
      Edit and save it
(Possibly back up the original file again)
Attempt to overwrite the origional by moving the identically named duplicate back into the folder.

Hope something works for you QA!
      Cheers,

I assume you have run the NWN2Launcher.exe file as admin from the program folder, and that doesn't work, correct? Using a shortcut has never worked for me, but launching the .exe from the program folder I've experienced no issues.

Also, as for your previously fixed issue with not being able to save the CD key: To edit any file within the 'Program Files' directory in windows you must first set your user account to Admin rights for the containing folder. To do so simply right click the containing folder, Select properties, then the Security Tab, highlight your user account, click edit, and check full control. Apply and now you can edit files as needed within that folder as well as its sub-folders.

          Hi,

it should not be NWNLauncher.exe but file nwn2main.exe. The rest should be the same.

          - create a shortcat of nwn2main.exe,
          - right click the shortcut choose properties,
          - in the txt box labled "target" add a space then -dmc to the end, it should look somehow like:

          "C:\Neverwinter Nights 2\nwn2main.exe" -dmc

          - run.

If you are able to run directly the toolset or the game as you mentioned above, this should work. Cheers.

*facepalm* you're right, using the client extender the icon is called nwlauncher.exe (which I had to do the same thing to)
I used to be a player like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Thanks for the input guys. I hate to say though, the nwn2main.exe loads me directly into the game as a player.

I have tried the actual launcher directly from the main file. That was the first thing I tried I should have mentioned. No. The main file gives that buggered message. I'm starting to think my launcher is corrupt somehow.

NWN2main.exe with the -DMC tag added via a shortcut?

I've done the blowoff my friend, though there's only so much I can blow on a laptop... Hmmm. That could be taken the wrong way.

Anyhow, I've found the problem. It isn't NWN2 per-se. It's that I just realized my computer has acquired the onset of Alzheimers.

Similar to the biological version, the brain is slowly deteriorating bit by bit. In this case, advanced age, and lots of usage, and a fall a couple weeks ago when 2 12yr olds decided to get into a fight in my room, it all adds up.

Imminent disk failure is my daily message and every time I have to restart it, some other program is missing a file, and can't run, then another, then another. So like the real Alzheimers my computers slowly forgetting everything.

I can't get into the client anymore, but I can schmooze as a player as long as I keep defrosting frozen produce. Sooner or later though that's going to stop too, when more files disappear.

We'll see what comes of things down the road. Hopefully a windfall will land me a more stable system.

I told you your disk was dying months ago when I looked at your system lol...

It sucks but even if your budget is small, you can get an HD for around 50 bucks these days if the biggest size isn't important... at least it gets you running.

As another note, it should be possible to run NWN2 off a 16 GB flash-drive. plug-and-play portability! well, there's the My-docs file that you'ld need to move each time, but in theory. . .

Oh I knew that, it was just a matter of time. Now I can say for certainty that it is indeed going through its final death throes.

On that note however, I'm going to plug on with it. Run'ner as much as I can until I can't even load up a command prompt.
