  • Detect Evil vs Opposition Stealth

Would detect evil allow for detection of someone who is in stealth?

I believe if you concentrate for all the rounds that are needed you can detect that someone is there, yes.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong though.

I'm going to prefix this by stating that the stealth system present in NWN2 is terrible. Beyond terrible.

The spell description for Detect Evil actually covers this quite nicely

      1st Round
      Presence or absence of evil.

      2nd Round
Number of evil auras (creatures, objects, or spells) in the area and the power of the most potent evil aura present.

If you are of good alignment, and the strongest evil aura’s power is overwhelming (see below), and the HD or level of the aura’s source is at least twice your character level, you are stunned for 1 round and the spell ends.

      3rd Round
The power and location of each aura. If an aura is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location
So if you're caught in the detecting floodlights for 3 rounds, but are following stealth rules (you're behind cover), then the ability/spell user should just have a vague "There's something evil over there".

If you're caught in the headlights but aren't playing by the rules and are out of cover, then you should be pinpointed and break stealth (Remember kids - No cover granting concealment, no stealth).

If the target has HiPS and is out of cover but within range of shadows then it'll be as the first - A feeling of direction and presence rather than an exact location.

I just wish the game had a proper stealth system, not the terrible crap we have now.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.
      Sydney Smith.

Is there any multiplayer RPG that does stealth well?

That being said, stealth is absurdly good in NWN1/2, so I certainly don't mind if someone were to detect me with detect evil. Not that I currently play any evil characters. (That anyone knows of!)

I (try) to use it more like an investigative RP tool by "staring" at the people to see if they have taint as apposed to a blanket effect. (if someone is evil and I can't actually see them because of stealth invisibility or LOS I generally ignore the findings). I personally think it should be a targeted spell/effect (and non detection should be a way higher level or cost money). So this is my vote for targeted effect

Just the opposite of Fezzik. One of my characters stands guard duty in quiet and gloomy surroundings. He "casts" detect good on more or less regular intervals to help sense invading do gooders. On rare occasion he can detect them sneaking past, but other then shake his fist or take a few RP'd wild swings at the air. He pretty much is left to throwing curses and threats. On very rare occasions he could follow them loosely until they slipped away or left. Which driving the do gooder away was a job well done.
Never have been overwhelmed though. Is it supposed to stun you within the game mechanics?

If the person is evil enough it will stun you (I think it might be level based not sure). I would no necessarily be averse to your idea red jack IF it didn't last so bloody long. It's not a 3 round duration it's more like 3 minutes which is another reason I think it should be targeted; fix the duration and give it a cool down time and I'd be happy. . I think it's something that should take effort RP wise if not mechanically or paladins would be walking around shaking their head at every peasant and noble on the street calling them out outright or at least with a disapproving look

Yes it stuns you, more then once a wee baby paladin has detected Grann then stood there waving for a few rounds quite fun to watch actually

                  here's a handy-dandy table for the strengths!

It be a lot easier to stun paladins and their ilk with a single level of cleric than to be an undead or anything . Much like Talleyman, Inquisitive Paladins detecting evil on a certain disguised hin has funny results, even if she technically can disguise her alignment.

Use of lingering auras would be AWESOME though.
