  • Worst part of making a character

As I sit here, staring at NWN2DB I find myself paralyzed with indecision. I know the choices I make are going to stick with me for my playing period, and I get pretty passionate about my characters. Is this going to fit the mood I set? Will I be able to contribute to the level I like? Will people see the overall character in the light I would like them? (like it or lump it, this is part of that process in my eyes) its maddening and I know I do it to myself.

Whats your worst part of character creation? Story? Name? that damn number crunching?

Breaking the server, and having to wait to be fixed.
    Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

    Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

I've suffered from poor planning on occasion, but my real hitch in character creation is that I can't seem to stop myself from making more, even if I don't have a good story thought out for the character. My brain is chock full of "what ifs" and "how abouts" that I want to try even when I've already got a full plate of PC's.
Presea De'Ombre - Fist of the Broken
      Darcy Lothara - Lost Soul
Miyu Suhayl - Defender of Beauty
      Bryna Ulric - Dark Priestess
      Merry Swiftblade - Swashbuckling Tailor

Choosing a name is always the hardest part of character creation for me. I'll have a character rolled in five minutes and then stare at the screen for an hour thinking of a suitable name. Every time.

Deciding if I REALLY need to make this particular idea for a character, or if I should go off and work on my other half-dozen other ingenious-at-the-time character concepts.

          Unfortunate truths:
Intention: [DM > Crafting > Faction Store > Drop > Regular Store]
Reality: [DM > Faction Store > Drop > Regular Store> Crafting]

The hardest part is trying to find an interesting mix of classes to create a truly unique character concept/background that is still viable.
              Account Name: LuvHandles
Maneae StrongArm - Devilish Warrior Woman (Active: Finding her place after time in reflection)
Minael Cel'Anon - Elven Smith, Knight and Wizard (Inactive: seeking clues to lost elven artifacts)
Aria Duvaine - Wouldn't you like to know . . . (Inactive: Whereabouts unknown)
Ra'd Malik - Mulhorandi Warrior (Inactive: Off on a mission for the BH)
Khyron Brinsbane - Fury of Auril (Inactive: Working with Cwn Annwn)
Chazre Kenner - All around good guy with a penchant for revelry and chasing the ladies. (Deleted: Team Good, returned to Cormyr)

I start the process by first deciding on a name for my character. The character's name drives appearance, accent, and even class selection most of the time. The hardest part of me is planning out my skill points.
                Cheers!

Dear sweet deity of your chooseing. This.

I spend hours struggeling over names tring to get the sylablies to flow just right and evoke the sense of the character the name is trying to portray.

More than 9 times out of 10 a day or two later the name will start to grate slightly and I'll be unable to play that character again. It is very frustraiting.

I have been trying to retire my Necromancer/Archmage character for a week or two now (I love writing his Roleplay Diary, but not so much in game) but I can't until I get a name that sounds just right.
The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.

The problem with using a build from NWN2DB is that you end up with a bonsai character, unable to grow flexibly based on events that happen to them in the world. When you're stuck to one track, your character can never be influenced, can never really learn anything or experience something life changing because that'd ruin your build. It's better to just keep your options as open as possible and be flexible, even if you don't end up with the super awesome uber build. Another option would be to consider what might happen to them and find a few arechtypal builds you could follow depending on what happens to your character.

Always roll a rogue and you cant go far wrong. Arcane character? mix in arcane trickster. Divine character? mix in some divine levels. Martial focus? mix in anything with high BAB or martial weapons.
Rogues are so flexible RP wise because you dont have to use a rigid script, hell your rogue could eventually end up taking paladin levels if his growth on the server leans that way (I dont care R3; I like rogue/paladins).
I imagine Bards are much the same due to their balanced party abilities, casting and large range of skills (and two high saves!), I dont play one frequently on sundren so I can't comment too much on that.

Nothing wrong with Paladin/Rogue builds, it's a perfectly legitimate path.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

Hold up, hold up. When the DM says "Skill check," if you don't say, "...shit," then you're not getting the full paladin experience.

I can totally see a rogue/paladin, though. There are a lot of skills that can turn a paladin into a stalker of evil (versus a big, shiny bug zapper of evil), and just imagine being able to spot the sneaky bastards!
