  • Rogue/Assassin Weapons

Just started playing a Roguish type of character and was wondering...is there any reason for a character to use a dagger (the traditional weapon of assassins) over shortsword or rapier?

In my Pnp campaign we made a house rule that daggers re-roll 1's on sneak attack damage (approx. giving u +1 min damage/sneak attack dice).

While im fairly certain this is impossible to implement in NWN, do they have any other benefits like + to hit on sneak attack etc?

Yes, I realise my RP writing sucks. Just be thankful I keep it short

It's generally understood that daggers are easier to conceal (Lower Sleight of Hand DC). They are also specialty blades when it comes to classes like the Invisible Blade, and are easier to sneak with (RP-wise).

But, to be honest, there isn't much of a difference between a short sword and dagger (or rapier/kukri) when it comes to actual use due to the majority of damage coming from sneak attacks.

Also size issues, as tiny weapons they can be used in the off hand of small creatures as light weapons. My characters tend to prefer the kukri over the dagger, they also work for the invisible blade and look cooler IMO. Kukri requires the martial weapon proficiency though.

Lester uses daggers. There are some with really cool looking designs/decals as well (one of his looks like a baselard and the other like a stilletto). I'd definately be keen to see more dagger designs ~ perhaps some eastern style ones like the Kris, Hachiwara or katara.

^ The main advantage of using daggers is that you look like a stone cold pimp. Its the only reason needed.

... seriously dual weild daggers and backstab people from stealth while listening to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AfMGHTQxVA

Daggers have style, though unless I've taken specialist feats or builds I'll save it for an off hand weapon with a longer bladed weapon in the main hand - A rapier and stiletto combo looks seriously mean and do-able with existing in game models.

Mechanically there's no advantage in dagger though, in fact you'd probably benifit from having weapons that can deal differing damaging types by using a hand-axe or mace in one hand with a piercing weapon in the other.

RP wise daggers are, as GD said, more concealable.

There's quite a few fencing prints where people are getting stabbed through the head. Crazy stuff.

A bit different from the German fencing schools where the objective seems to be wearing crazy costumes, giving each other cool scars and promoting nationalistic ferver.

I guess they needed a break from being the most tumultuous feudal body to ever exist. Seriously, you could murder a family in one district and walk to the next and be completely scot free as far as the law was concerned because the local lord doesn't give a damn and is maybe even waylaying the previous lord's roads and butchering his people for money anyway. It's like skyrim in real life, but on drugs and with no quicksave feature.

The HRE was crazy. Plain and simple.

I would be game for a few more magical bonuses applied to daggers. Assassin/rogue only with some nifty benefits.

Or give all daggers in the game a +1d6 bonus damage on sneak attack bwhahaha (or just a straight +3 damage?)

Wouldn't be all that overpowered, considering u could be sneak attacking with a rapier for 1d6/18-20 (although it does make u feel like an idiot sneaking up with a rapier...)

I don't really see the need to buff daggers all that much, Sundren has some pretty bad ass ones already. It'd be nice just to see more magical daggers. It makes sense actually too, daggers and staves are among the most commonly used wizard weapons so you'd figure there'd be quite a few magic ones kicking around. Long swords too, over the years as Elf mages lived and died from various adventuring incidents and so forth. I'd say more battle axes as well, because I just like battle axes, but hey there's already actually quite a few good ones (would be nice to have a troll slaying one though damn it... And some trolls to kill with it).

There is no real benefits to using a dagger if you are a medium sized creature such as human or elf. But if you are a small sized creature such as a halfling, i imagine youll suffer less penalties for dual wielding them as opppose to using a rapier or shortsword. That being said, why do people use hammers and mace weapons other than rp flavor? They seem to be inferior to their sword/axe counter part on every way.
