  • Player Run Events

    Greetings All,

I was wondering if there were any guidelines to player-run events. I ask this because I occasionally get this idea in my head to pay random adventuerers at the campfire to go hunting for nonexistant plants. Obviously, there is no starflowers or Sunderian River Thistles in the game, but as a holistic gameworld there needs to be some variety somewhere, be it plants, woodland animals, river-rocks, what-have-you. In my experience, RP tends to be more rewarding when pushed forward by a character, rather than the DM, but it often limits options. As a player, I cannot speak for the environment, as that is the designation for the DM, but neither is it the DM's job to run someone else's event. Vala, Coreska, and Kitsunetsume made search rolls in a number of places, but, due to lack of responce from the enviromnent, in the end I just decided that a partiular location held a particular type of plant. In the most recent expedition, we were lucky enough to have DM_Poltergheist overhead and watching, but that inspired a rather interesting question: Who decides what rolls succeed or fail in a player-run event?

If anyone has a responce to this question, or other guidelines you think might be helpful, please comment.

    Cheers,
    Kit

I think I may have an herbalism book on PDF which may have tables for that. In kind, I would like to see some tables added to the wiki for this very purpose to act as guidelines for this. Also, this subject perhaps would be better in Suggestions as this is something I wouldn't mind working on for the wiki if given enough information to construct something.

DM's always have the final say.

That said player initiated events are great. Most of us are more than willing to work with you help you make them the best they can be. (I would much prefer to facilitate player initiated events over DM plot hooks FYI)

Keep a few things in mind.

You CANNOT speak for ANY NPC. Ever. You can report something they have said. But you cannot put words in there mouth.

You can't award XP but some DMs are willing to consider awards based on posts reports etc. So make sure to document what you do and tug a sleeve or two.

You are free to award any of your characters items to other players.

The best thing to do would to be to submit a character request outlining your plans. As long as it follows sundren rules, you should be okay. The heads up just gives up time to steer you in the right direction and avoids any pitfalls/fallout. It also increases the chance that one of us can help by adding items creatures or NPCs.

Thank You, Acorn, for that clarification, I'll do my best to put in requests/report, but most of them are spur-of-the-moment 'how can I RP with these low-level people and have everyone have a fun time' sort of thing. I have not yet spoken for an NPC and shall continue to not-do so, but have, when the situation allowed for such, occasionally utalised Kit's +28 disguise and wandered past as though another person, usually to achieve some end or another (What better way to smuggle goods than clueless adventurers?).

Aniril, if you could direct me to that PDF, it would be helpful. It is my intention to eventually post a 'Guidebook to Sundren Plants' in the 'Sundren Press' forum: the idea being that each of the expeditions gains a bit more info for it each time. That being said, if anyone has any ideas for such, feel free to PM me about it.

Player run events tend to just be natural RP to me. People should be doing things! That's the point! SPeaking for the environment as a player, I tend to just go with agreed upon standards for the party. If everyone agrees a guard is likely to punch Bill's face in, what's the harm of RPing that without a DM?

It just gets messy when people are at odds. DMs can moderate and decide that stuff easier, players tend to want to be right with each other. It's like a game with no referee so anyone can call any foul.

Otherwise I tend to enjoy watching RP from players

I think a guard is generic enough if applied in a realistic fashion. I'd hate for people not to take NPC protectors into account for RP simply because a DM isn't online to make a guard do it's job.

There's a difference between emoting that a bartender passes you an ale and putting words directly into an NPC's mouth. Is that what we're getting at here?

Pretty much, and it'd be easier to predict what a guard would do than, say, the Harbinger of Wrath. Y'know?
