    Class Review: Wizard

NWN Definition: “Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells. Everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition to learning new spells, a wizard can, over time, learn to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. Some wizards prefer to specialize in a certain type of magic. Specialization makes a wizard more powerful in her chosen field, but it denies her access to some of the spells that lie outside that field.”

FRwiki Definition: “Wizards are a form of mage who learn the art of arcane spellcasting through research and learning. What wizards lack in combat prowess and armor they make up with a broad range of magical spells and abilities learned through years of practice and training. Through their spellcasting ability powerful wizards can control the battlefield, using spells that affect wide areas, often hindering enemies, while also learning to use powerful rituals of arcane power.”

    MY VIEW

Wizards, either good or evil, are obsessed with arcane power. They have to be, as the only way to learn magic as a wizard does is to research it ALMOST to the exclusion of all else. Wizards have to put great emphasis on preparation, as to be caught unprepared is to be dead.

I do not claim not to be guilty of this, but wizards shouldn’t spew spells out frivolously. There should always be a reason, even if it is paranoid insanity.

There are no alignment restrictions for playing a wizard so trying to find a concrete way to RP them outside of the obsession for arcane power is pointless. The reasons can be many and varied.

Hooray for Zoidberg!!! We made it through to here without getting a thread locked. I enjoyed doing this and look forward to going through the PrC’s.

The fact that you completely forgot about rogues pretty much speaks volumes about the class.

My bad I'll do it later, I must have been drinking that day.

Wizards are nice I guess. with a splash of divine and a healthy dose of mystic theurge they can be very strong and diverse indeed! Since FR has a wealth of arcane focused deities its not very hard to find one to fit your character either.

I personally wouldn't bother with one as a single class when there are loads of flavoursome arcane advancing PrCs that get more than the wizard's 1 per 5 bonus feat.

Wizard is just a stepping stone to a PrC usually. Pure wizards don't get enough bang to compete with the perks of a PrC.

RP wise, it's fun to watch wizards argue about magical philosophies, though technically anyone with enough Knowledge:Arcana can usually jump into the debate.

Love RPing Wizards, I just hate the NWN spell memorisation akwardness for some reason.

The wizards of the Unseen University from the Discworld (Terry Pratchett). Best Wizard inspiration source ever.
