Class Review: Bard
Game definition: “A bard brings forth magic from his soul, not from a book. He can cast only a small number of spells, but he can do so without selecting or preparing them in advance. His magic emphasizes charms and illusions over the more dramatic evocation spells that wizards and sorcerers often use. In addition to spells, a bard works magic with his music and poetry. He can encourage allies, hold his audiences rapt, and counter magical effects that rely on speech or sound. Bards have some of the skills that rogues have, although bards are not as focused on skill mastery as rogues are. A bard listens to stories as well as telling them, of course, so he has a vast knowledge of local events and noteworthy items.”
FRwiki definition: "Bards are versatile arcanists, capable in combat, art, and magic alike. Bards practice magic as they would art or song and use their artistic talents to induce magical effects that either bolster their party or hinder their enemy, typically through illusion magic. They also are among the most versatile of characters, capable of learning from practically any trade."

MY VIEW
Bards are awesome.
Using this class gives the player literally the ultimate in RP flexibility. Bards can be anything from an evil poetic killer to the royal court jester with a heart of gold to something as simple as a wandering collector of stories.
Any character with bard levels is a bard, and should act the part of being a bard; there are a lot of options. I never have liked seeing characters with bard levels taken merely as a means to an end or to support another class’ levels they have taken.
I’ve decided to risk creating a firestorm by doing a short review like this on all the base and PrC classes available on Sundren and ask for the communities input on anything related to that class such as RP tactics, personal views, lore tidbits, and character build strategies.
Keep it clean, thanks.
