In exploring the issue further I have a few questions to place the initial suggestion into context:

How defensive are the melee-er's you make?
Are you talking about a certain level range?
How do you play your melee character and at what speed do you expect to slay the foes / gain the gold?
Do you ever find Nice gear in drops (e.g. green and blue loot items)? Drops in turns of bandages? Are bandages too slow for the pace of your play style?
At what pace do you expect your character to progress in gear and levels? where is your sweet spot?
How regularly do you get some DM lovin for factions or adventures?

having played both melee and pc characters, the game seems pretty balanced to me given the various advantages and disadvantages.

Might i suggest a change in playstyle or approach as an alternative.

Your are probably right. And while you may very well be correct that a change in my play style would decrease the amount of potions and bandages my melee characters consume... No matter how I play my character will ever actually impact the per unit costs of these consumables for everyone else. Am I the only one who feels it is quasi cost prohibitive to play a melee toon? Perhaps.

To provide the context you were asking for... let me suggest the following. I have a 16th level cleric that can execute 7 Faith Healing spells at anytime after resting. Faith Healing provides 8 base points of healing + cleric level, which at the moment provides me 24 points of healing. This is a lot of healing potential that does not cost him a dime. If I am not mistaken, he cannot use these on anyone but himself. So he can quickly heal up to 144 points without burdening any cost. He can also do so in combat if he so wishes... He too carries a bundle of silk bandages and he also places points in Heal.

All of my characters use heal potions only as rescue aids. I rely on my ability to use silk bandages to make up the difference.

      Cheers!

Faith Healing works on anyone who has the same deity as you. A Lathaderite can Faith Heal any Lathanderite for full effect.
        Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

        Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

In all my experience, four casters are doing their jobs! (I forget names, but: Xaaynes' players' halfling wizard who died, a low level druid, a stoned Spirit Shaman, and a Bard)

Casters are allowed to complain at spells having gold costs when the gold cost exceeds 10% of what it costs me to buff enough to get close to a Clerics mid-effort combat power. (Stoneskin scrolls aren't cheap!)
