  • Picking a Faction

Of the three characters I regularly play two are members of the Corps de Grace, and one is new member of Bristlebeard's Hollow.
    1. Sacred Fist of Lathander
    2. Cleric of Chauntea
    3. Dwarven Defender
I like being a member of Arbiter's Alliance because they are associated with fighting evil and countering the Black Hand. These things appeal to me. But then again I would rather not have every single character I play in the same faction. So I began thinking, if I wanted to remain LG/NG and were not a member of the Corps de Grace... then what faction would / could I join?

I copied the factions below from the Wiki and then I noted what I felt was a key attribute about the faction, e.g. Deity, Race, or PRC specific. What I determined - IMO - is that the CdG plays an important role in Sundren.

CdG allows CG/NG/LG characters who are not a member of the Triumvirate's core deities to be part of a larger organization with a noble cause.
    1.Arbiter's Alliance
    a.Church of Helm (Deity Specific)
    b.The Triumvirate (Deities Specific)
c.Corps de Grace = My current faction
    2.Black Hand (Deities Specific)
    a.Children of Colibrus (Deity Specific)
3.Exigo Syndicate (Possibility - Typically Craftsmen)
    a.Bristlebeard's Hollow (Whurest) (Race Specific)
    b.The Blackwood Company (Possibility)
    4.Thayan Enclave (Deity/PRC Specific)

    5.Kurz Cartel (?)
    a.Eboncoin Pact (Rogue Requirement)
    6.Sundarian Legion (Possibility)
    a.Hands of Mundus (Arcanist Specific)
    b.Red Blades (PRC Specific)
7.Veritas Syndicate (Possibility - Chaotic and not lawful)

8.Wardens of the Vale (Class Specific)
a.Servants of the Circle (Class/PRC Specific?)
    b.Wrath of Nature (Class/PRC Specific?)
    c.Nature's Vanguard (Class/PRC Specific?)
Let me be clear, I am not looking for any factions to change. I am merely interested in hearing what factions others chose and more importantly - why.

    Cheers!

5 has the Cartel and Eboncoin as joinable options. Cartel membership gets forgotten, because one needs Theives Cant to join

      Well, since you asked..

Black Hand over here. Why, you may ask? Besides in such games as Knights of the Old Republic and a few others, rarely do you get the chance to play as the antagonist. I can't tell you how overwhelmingly boring it is to play 'The Good Guy' in most games.

Without the antagonist, where is the story? Also, there seems to be more lawful/good/neutral characters on the server than there are evil ones. (My observation may be mistaken, but the most I've ever seen is probably four at one time. Two of those players ragequit.)

The enjoyable thing about The Black Hand is that it isn't a terrorist cell. I'm not going to walk up to you, zap you with a green laser, then cackle as your dust pile blows away in the wind. Oh no. It's so much more elaborate; more cunning, if you will. It gives an opportunity to be evil, but with a rather (sometimes insurmountable) challenge. I hate playing games on easy mode.

In short: It's something different, something challenging. 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple - all things enjoyable.

Thank you for sharing. I can appreciate the reasons you decided to join the Blackhand. An old character of mine (Paddy McFearsome, 15th level, WM) was a mid-level faction member in the Blackhand. But, I found it really difficult to play an evil character and ended up perm'ing him. In fact, my "hat" is off to anyone who plays an evil character well.

The server wouldn't be as fun if there weren't good and evil characters... or factions for that matter.
        Cheers!

Yeah, you've got that right. But the challenge only makes you stronger!

You mean hat? Don't make me ask Bane to get all up in your face now..

I've found the trick to playing a compelling evil character is to not actually believe you're evil at all.
            Player of:
            Nadya Frost -
            Witchy Woman (http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17774)

Freudian slip? Not at all. Thank you for pointing out the error. I corrected it to avoid Bane from knocking on my door.

I chose the Hands of Mundus, since it is by and far the most recognizable Mage Guild circle in Sundren and even though it is tied politically to the Sundarian Legion it isn't actually a Legion station. Eirimil Gaelazair is an Elite Magi of Sinistrum, the Black Tower of the Left. Lore-wise, this makes him the superior of pretty much any non-Centurio in any event that the Hands (or he himself) deem 'reasonably threatening to Sundarian welfare'. I look at it like I'm a Spectre from the Mass Effect series: he's in a position of power that is authorized by the government, but not really beholden to it. He comes and goes as he pleases and spends more of his time doing his 'own thing' than worrying about the trivial matters of whatever today's 'dire threat' is - unless it catches his attention. Then he vaporizes some shit with Maximized and Quickened Disintegrates, etc.

The noticable lack of an elven community, much like the noticable lack of a halfling community (Dwarves are cool enough to get Whurest, though) was one of the biggest factors in this decision, since there was no 'alternative' or even much choice in the decision.
                  Active
Reinamar Stormseeker - The bladestorm that must turn back the wind. Arkerym of The People, practitioner of the forgotten art, pariah.

Tyler Penleigh - Obligatory author insert, Red Blade Defender, sarcastic jerk, caring brother, loving fiancé, war criminal.

                  Retired/Dead
Eirimil Gaelazair (Dead)- Bitter. Caustic. Abrasive. Egocentric. Probably right. Found dead in the burned-out Viridale forest a few weeks after the survivors were able to sweep the area after the Bloodmaim offensive. Aside from his usual attire, an intricate music box was the only thing in his possession.

I've been trying to join the Triumvirate... being a cleric of Tyr... but I can't find the crypt Brother Malchior speaks of. He tells of a crypt deep within the sharharan hills where banedead dwell... but I can't find it. However, I did find a cave in the Sharharn woods that has banedead. I went in there and killed all of them and an inner room but nothing to help me move my quest along. Has anyone else joined the Triumvirate? So far in game I haven't met anyone in that faction.
It's hard to explain this without a spoiler... so sorry about that if I offended anyone with my ignorance.

There should be a wall there for you to get into, but you have to have a decent search score in order to be able to spot it and open it. The banedead you need for the quest are in there.

The paladin you're searching for is Dain Tornbrook.

Also, everything OnyxTigress said above is correct, but additionally you're going to need someone to come along that has a Search score to find the hidden door.

My character Minael was with Torgrem when he attempted this. We found the wall and got through it, but nothing spawned back in that room. Maybe we'll just have to try it again.
