Snowmane does have a point.. probably around ten, at least. Otherwise you're just cannon-fodder with a possibly ornate character description and biography.

Agreed with H2O regarding world plots, simply because of the wide variety of character attendance.

But most DM events are catered to the individual. I hear a lot of friendly calls from DMs for plot ideas. So you don't need to be high level to get into a plot - but I agree it helps for most of the big, worldchanging ones. As it should

        Quoted for truth.

I've posted my schedule this week, and will likely do so in the future if someone comes up with a character plot they wish to do. All you folks need to do is think it up and let me know (and be there, of course).

That's a problem. Low server population makes it that much tougher to find characters of similar level to party with.

And yes, people do tend to forget they have a low-level member who needs to be protected. If you're a front-liner, you want to be in a party with a cleric-type. If you're a back-liner you need to find people who will remember how weak you are and keep an eye that you're not getting into trouble. Just watch your vitality carefully.

You may have to just run and abandon your friends, too. Try to be careful to leave yourself an exit wherever you are. Higher-level folks shouldn't mind in the least and may actually shout at you to do that in-game. Just don't leave it too late, either.

Of course all this is much easier for me to say than for you to put into practice, but hopefully you'll find something useful here.
          Cheers,
          Dave

I don't expect to change the world, but I don't really want to be a burden to a higher level group either.

Like I said, everyone has been very nice and in some cases spent a lot of time role-playing with my character when grouping was not really viable. Natiel and Bren have been especially awesome, and I have had the pleasure of encountering Seheren on many occasions in his different characters. Corbett has also been an interesting character to interact with, even if Kaylar doesn't trust him . And I try not to bother the DMs too much, as I am still newish and trying not to make a nuisance of myself. Grinning has been very helpful so maybe I'll bother him sometime with my horribly underpowered but favorite character, Kaylar Snowmane.

But, one time, I got into a group of players in their teens with Minael (I think he was level 8 at the time, my highest level guy) and it turned out bad for him. And really I was not surprised. He simply wasn't up to snuff for that particular group and tasks they were undertaking. It was a risk I was willing to take so I can't complain, and it was fun while it lasted. Once I get another couple levels under his belt I think he will be in a good position to be involved either with those a little lower or those a little higher than he.

I also have a character that I play less often as she forms a group with 2 of my RL friends who have joined me on the server. They play less than I do and are likely never going to participate on the forums. But at least I have someone I can bug to play with me when no one is available on the server.

I had a rough time over the past little while with certain ongoing issues and decided to take a break from Sundren to just enjoy myself for a couple weeks. Beat Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 twice and am working on my third play through of the sequel. Though I've had my break and I'm getting back in the swing of DMing again so expect to see me in game more often from here on out.

Personally I prefer running stuff for low levels. I think the paradigm of highlevels being the ONLY ones who can influence things is ridiculous. In my personal experience it is often the little things that nudge the ship off course.

When I was a player, I think I felt the same as H2O though. That comes with a heavy emphasis or priority for leveling. "once I get to 15 I can finally be evil" this has been said *rolls eyes*. "Once I get my PRC I can finally RP."

I am telling you right now if you are just trying to level in the hopes that you will then be GIVEN stuff, you are in for a disappointment.

Get involved now. What ever level you are. Checking in with your faction is the easiest way. Find out what is going on and what you can do to help. Might just be a courier run but it is sure to do (at minimum) one of two things. Get you on the DMs radar and/or provide you with challenges to your characters development.

I absolutely agree with this sentiment. I spent nearly six months under the old system getting a character to 20th level. The entire time I thought once I achieved 20th level things would magically begin to happen for me.

Well... the truth is now that the character is 20th level it is not nearly as fun. Now I try to enjoy and better development my characters as they level and not when they level.

                    Cheers!

Then it just becomes a question of having enough low levels around to party up.

Part of the challenge with "getting involved with world plots" is the timing. If you aren't around for an event, and you are a new player, it's tough to know what the events are or how to get involved.

I'd like to suggest a rolling, live "Current Events" thread sticky! (I know it's a suggestion, sorry for the wrong forum!) It would help new players angle their RP, write posts, and make requests to online DMs.

I'm definitely going to second Chiang's suggestion, sounds extremely good to me.

Even some quick one-liner like "Bane's materialization coming you a valley near YOU! 8PM CST, be there or be dead!" in a post would be pretty easy to follow. Gives players no excuse to complain if they aren't there, since its posted ahead of time.

(If this is already being done, could someone redirect me to it? I see people's schedules, and that's really helpful and all, but event timings and perhaps a one-line description of it at best would be super helpful)

School is why I have not been on. For the most I usly keep a PC around a spectrum of levels and would gladly switch to party or RP with people. Feel free to ask me at anytime.

I am spending what little of my free time playing and will be playing some of those games you guys already mentioned. By the time im done with those, i imagine diablo 3 will be out, and ill be playing that. So you probably wont see me too much either for a good many months, except to pop in and say hi.
