  • Unofficial General Etiquette for In-Game Play

    1. When taking a role-play action that could be contested, allow other players the opportunity to contest it.

    2. When adventuring, if you find a person or group ahead of you, either attempt to join them if it's in character to do so or let them move ahead and go do something else. "Leapfrogging" a slower moving group is rude and inconsiderate of other people's play.

3a. When in a group, don't loot a boss monster unless you're taking the quest item, as well. Due to the OOC nature of these repeatable quests, the boss's loot should go to whomever will be remitting the quest item. You will have / have had your turn.
3b. For monster drops and chests, agree on a looting guideline. Some ideas include:

    *Finders=Keepers (free-for-all)
*Need before Greed (free-for-all, with the caveat that items useful to a particular character are handed over without argument)
*Gentlemen's Agreement (everyone shows restraint in looting, approximating a fair loot deviation)
*Share the Wealth (all loot is pooled and divided evenly at the end of the excursion, either by item or by selling it all and dividing the gold)
**Draw Straws (variant on Share the Wealth: players roll a d20, with the highest choosing first; if loot remains after all players have chosen, the last-choosing player chooses again, followed by the second-to-last, and so on)

    4. Walk, don't run. You're losing the chance to RP with your sprinting about, and it's hard for DMs to catch you and do something for/with/against/around you.

    5. If you mean to ignore someone, ignore him/her through an emote instead of complete inaction. Nonverbal role play goes a long way toward inclusion.

6a. Write a character description. It helps other players interact with you based on physical traits and fleshes out your character.
6b. Read character descriptions. They help you interact with other players based on physical traits and clues contained therein.
6c. Do not dictate reactions to your description within your description.

    7. When in nonhostile locations, be searchable, as this allows other players the opportunity to find you and enjoy role play.

8a. Try to include meaningful RP with CvC conflict.
8b. When able, try to give an in-character indication of impending CvC. When not able, an OOC tell is courteous.
8c. Do not use OOC tells as an excuse to buff, run, feign being afk, or perform any other action to avoid or prepare for CvC.
8d. If you disarm someone, do your best to return the disarmed item unless you're claiming it as the permitted 1-item prize for killing/knocking out an opponent in CvC.

        8. Be searchable.

          9. Don't assume role generalization, e.g. all clerics are buffers, all fighters are tanks unless you have already established an IC relationship.

9a. Allow each character the opportunity to role play according to their character's race, class, PrC, or back story - not your personal preconceptions.
          Cheers!

            qfmft.

            10. When CvC is unavoidable, or is going to happen, send an OOC tell to the other party. If it's going to be a continual battle past that one CvC situation- make sure both parties understand.

Please try to keep hostile and CvC interactions enjoyable RP for all.

Taking time to kick someone out of your faction turf with groovy RP and plenty of time to make up your mind to leave or to fight and to get into how your character would react... enjoyable.

Getting hips'd and hostiled then sneak attacked immediately after my character was half dead from fighting a neutral territory boss and then my disarmed axe stolen by said character -- with zero RP.... not enjoyable. (yes this happened like my second week on the server)

              Just a suggestion...
Good work on the Etiquette post, Root, btw... kudos!

                this. Point 10.

That kinda shit's gotta stop. Next time it happens, hit up a DM. This type of gameplay borderlines OOC/IC feelings, and just ruins the game for everyone.

What's really sad is that I probably know who did it. heh.

Updated. ManUtd, those are good principles, but I left them off the list because those are attitudes that are harder to tangibly affect.

Bring things like this to the attention of the DM team, people who persistently do stuff like this simply do not belong here - It's unpleasant, unwelcome and offers no progression to anyone.

If you can, have a chat with the person who did it and try to sort it out IG, if that fails, come to us and we'll have a quiet powerword:smite.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

2a. Don't leapfrog a group of 1 either you might not have been in the area when they were looking to find a party.

I can not count the number of times, some group has charged past my PC... I am often there alone because no one was around and would I gladly join a party, I try and start some RP and they have all passed me with out a word.

                            3b
*Party Pool and Need before Greed can co exist.

5a Give people time to respond, not everyone took typing class or forms their thoughts for their PC as fast as you do. They could also be in the middle of a tell, or responding to a post in the forums.

                            Or this post.

6d No Meta info in Character names, "Evil McNecromancer" is not good. While name tags are suposed to be ignored if your rub meta info in peoples faces its going to be noticed.

6e Do not put Meta information in a Character description. If it can easily be spotted and or a game mechanic does not make it possible to show, list it. Things like weapons, how you carry your self, voice, demeanour.

                            11 Combat
11a Do not sick your self into another parties fight unless invited, or they look like they are about to die. If an NPC switches from them to you by all means defend your self.

11b Don't send party invites to someone you can see is in the middle of a fight, that pop up is annoying and gets in the way of the action.

Number X: When playing a spellcaster, consider that the role does heavily imply aiding other characters. Work as a team, rather than soloing in the same direction. Almost any class can do this with some effort, and it makes the life of one of the underpowered classes easier.

Nothing is more demotivating to a Fighter than sitting at the backline, watching a lone, lower-level wizard or cleric tear unharmed through hordes of things they have to expend large amounts of resources to solo.

Do it in your own time, fine, but don't rub our terrible choice in our faces even more, guis! >_<
