  • Hellstrom Proving Grounds

I'd like to organize another tournament for the proving grounds as they seemed to be quite popular. However part of the delay is we lack any formal system of ranking fighters and determining matches.

We would also like to have several different categories... so I am opening up the discussion to our community... Does anyone know how it was done in ye olde times?

Here are a few categories we'd like to have:

    - Duel (Melee)
    - Duel (Caster)
    - Duel (Overall)
    - Team

Any suggestions for good stats to track for the arena are welcome as well.

Take magical equipment out of the equation.

Track Win/Loss, Damage Done, Damage Received, Most Damage Done in a Single Attack, Most Damage Received in a Single Attack. Also, could be fun to track quickest/longest matches.

True, but we need to determine how rankings are done. How many wins before you take on the champion?

Obviously Joe Blow who just walked into the arena should not be facing the Champion.

Run it like any tournament. All participants must register up front. Once the roster is locked, parings for the first round are decided. Winners from said round progress to the next. In the end two will be left standing. The NCAA tourny that is just about to start provides a good example.

I would also like to recommend you consider faction champions. Either by election or combat, each faction sends their recognized Champion to the games. These Champions can be intergrated into the tourny's brackets or fight as an aside.

        Cheers!

          Net guy rocks.

I quite like the idea of following traditional gladiatorial item/weapon schemes, but I'm not sure how practical that would actually be or how it would be enforced (we'll have Cirion down as retiarii tunicati).

If it's a scripted system, then we need to throw in the occasional animal fight..

Faction champions sound like a nice idea, maybe you could have winners in duels dedicate their victory to faction x or whatever to gain some reputation or minor sponsorship fee.

I would say go off of what Manu said. Start with a field of say 16 Individuals and a field of 8 teams (2 on 2 or 3 on 3) so on and determine the single champion by the singles tournament and the team champion the same. from the first tournament you can have the champion allotted rewards such as not having to participate in future tornys and just taking on the champion of the next one (that determines the new current champion). As Saulus said you have different categories, such as Arcane, Melee, Divine, and team can do any of the above. In times where a torny seems to big you just go with a few games such as monsters Vs a individual or team. Those are just a few thoughts that I have.
