  • What are your techniques for leveling?

When I first started playing I began my journey through the Gates of Sundren. I found my way to the Shaharan Hills and started to collect Goblin ears like everyone else. While still at 3rd level, I would turn the ears in after a short period of time to collect the XP and gold. Before I knew it I would progress to fourth level. Then the XP dropped…

I asked a friend of mine what his particular leveling technique was for new characters, and he told he never turns in the ears or the chief’s head until after he already reached 4th level. I adopted this technique and found that it worked the best for me too.

There were times when it was nearly impossible to kill the Chief until after I had already reached 4th level, but nevertheless the same technique applied. The question became what to do to get to 5th level?

I like to read the forum and found an old entry from 2009 (http://www.sundren.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10241) that helped me navigate through a series of quests at Port Avantyr. These are great because they provide nearly 1,000 XP and a similar amount of gold. I found that a combination of these quests and sometime in Shaharan Hills would take me to 5th level in no time. Once I reached 5th level I would then execute a predetermined faction quest and off I went…

I was wondering if others had their own techniques for leveling that they would like to share. Specifically, I am looking for your personal favorites beyond 6th level… but if you have a technique other than the one I posted I would like to learn from it.

    Cheers!

    Party On.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WccfbPQNMbg

It's weird to say, but people just don't party up enough.

The number of times I've hopped on and had a look around to see what's going on with people and found everyone off soloing - Quite often within the same level range (1-2 people doing ogres, another in the Viridale orcs, someone in Mossclaw village and another in the easy cartel areas).

Soloing means that you're normally pushing the easy end of your level scale, getting low XP rewards as a result, grouping up means you can take on higher level areas with lower risk, meaning larger XP rewards - A reward further increased by the fact that parties of 3 or more get an XP bonus!

Being part of a party also increases the chances of a DM taking an interest in your group and getting an event or something in motion.

If there's only a few people on, don't be afraid to send /tells around to see if anyone's OOCly interested in getting a group on, no-one (hopefully) is going to flip out at the suggestion of having some group fun.

Just remember - 3 in a bed is more rewarding for everyone involved, and the more the merrier (up to around 6 people, then it just becomes a little awkward).
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

It depends on the Char...mainly how much AC they can pull off and how much dmg they can do

but 6-8 & sometimes 9 are all in the Viridale...between the quests and the beasties

AC wise 23-26 is fine for the mossclaw Gnolls, you need some kind of Acid Resist for the Muckspear but 24AC is fine

26 is manageble for the Grimaxe orcs in short bursts...28 is great for anything outside of the chief

Ogres you want 28+ and then only in short bursts if youre soloing

      THEN

the range I struggle with the most...largely due to my hatred of running the necropolis...9-12

if at 9 my AC is 28 I run cold climb if it is 30+ I skip ahead and run the argyle zombies...very carefully and only the 6 outside

I hate the sestra caves...creeping cold is a terrible spell en masse like that

sooo its Argyle till lvl 16-17...then Party play becomes necissary

That's my soloist recipe...if youre in a party try something easy to get a feel for each other then go gradually harder

....Always test first...some people have compatability issues with others CvE style wise

What Doubt said...the cartel area UNDER Aquor is great but I always forget its there

I read a post you made recently where you gave similiar advice. I think this is great insight.

Personally, I will not solo the Orcs or the Orges... When I began playing on the server my toons died too many times from Orc swarms or at the hands of the Orc Chief. Same for the Orges. So my technique is to always team up for these two areas.

So its not just me? Good to know.

I like this area a lot. Another area not generally discussed is Shar, especially for melee toons.

The trick to leveling is to have a buffer on speed dial if you're any type of melee. Ramza sells his full buffs for 50g to people traveling Sharahan, and 150g+ for everyone else. I do this because it plays well into the Thayan RP, and there are a lot of people who have nothing to do in the early morning and nobody to party with.

As a wizard, I was lucky to have a monk to level with all the way to 14. From there, I found a favored soul and a monk/druid to grind with. That made it exceptionally easy for me.

From 3->5 it was Sharahan Hills, from 5->8 it was Mossclaw/Orcs, and from 8->14 it was Argyle/Cartel Mountain, from 14->18 it was Veritas. I usually only had a party of 2 when leveling, because of availability.

Right when I was lvling Sebastian from 3-18 (Wiz5/Druid5/MT10) my roomate was playing a Swash/Rogue/Duelist...and before the dmg and ac was increased on the mossdale orcs we were PWNING the ones outside the temples...and we once made it all the way to the last room in the Temple of Gruumsh

It works best with a MT but a straight wizard or druid works fine...clerics arent bad but the lack of stoneskin really limits there usefullness as party buffers on this server (which is why you see them soloing so much)

But working things out to have a Buffer/Melee duo is an even eaisier easy mode than FS or Cleric for CvE

Now if you manage to have a Cleric, Druid, and Wizard along with that Meleer...A La Cruven/Seb/Xaayne it is rediculously easy to kill things

Still the most important thing about Partying is chemistry

I was in a party of 8 people lvl 7-9 and we kept dying due to poor chemistry...and bad decision making...and missclicks

...I've always liked 2-4 chars best...any more and it gets too noisy

But as for Grimaxe Orcs, My strategy(solo) goes like this

The two most important objects outside the palasade are the stone thingy and the palasade wall to the left(as you face toward it from the transition) of the opening

You spawn in with 26AC(I hope)

You get closer to spawn the first four

You get close enough they start atacking you

Do not charge them...let them charge you...ignore the archers

Take out the two melees as they charge you

go up behind the rock thingy until the archers go "black" meaning they lose their LOS on you and charge down

they should be close enough they bring out short swords...then you take them out

Then you go up by the left wall

creep inside to trigger the spawn

duck back out after they attack to the left wall again...run back to the transition if they start swarming and duck out if your char is overwhelmed

you should be able to pull all from the middle spawn group and possibly four from the left spawn group...you might have to gulp a healing potion here but you should be able to handle that many with 26ac

after that take a moment to bandage up as necissary

all the archers should have charged you when you ducked out due to losing LOS

charge in and finish the 2-4 remaining on the left side

run in and loot the left gold barrel

go to the exact middle of the bottom area and if you have a missle wep draw the ones from the right spawn as few at a time as possible

if you only have a melee wep draw as few as possible by creeping up to them

STAY AWAY FROM THE UPPER RIGHT ENTRANCE (This is important as the pathfinding will try to put you too close to there)

              Finish off the right spawn

creep toward the upper right entrance to determine if the chief is there

if not charge and finish them off

              if so transition out

Clerics and FS used to be able to handle the chief solo with Living Undeath

Wizard/Melee Hybrids can take him with Ghostly Visage(or whatever that 2nd lvl spell that gives DR and Concealment is called) it and mirror image make this area pretty easy for melee wizards

and the greatest tip I ever got...BARKSKIN potions or scrolls...scrolls are cheaper but its glitchy about who can use them apparently

Me and groups tended to brave Argyle, and pick off single Demonflesh zombies. It wasn't as fast or rewarding as the ogres and Viridale, but the bragging rights were well worth it.

Get a group of 2-6 level 3's, run Viridale. Once you get to level 5 after half an hour, never play the character again. That's my strategy.

I look for the guys that are red, and then I hit them and make their bars go down. If their bars go all the way down, they stop hitting me. I make red bars go down until my blue bar goes all the way from left to right, and then I get my level.

                          Roleplay.

No, seriously. While I did kill a few goblins, gnolls, and ogres, I also got a lot of XP from the ticker and DMs. I think Emmi's teen levels came from Argyle and Veritas for the most part. The upper levels came from Bloodmaim with some duergar thrown in for fun.

                          But yeah - roleplay!

                            You call that roleplay?

When you aren't busy reading my character requests as a not-DM to learn about my secret plots, not cybering with the vampires, not OOC grinding, then maybe you RP.

Otherwise, you just exploit the RP ticker.

There's a secret multiplier for the RP ticker if you stand in JUST the right location at the Crossroads. So I hear.
