  • Feedback on Cleric of Lathander

Currently playing a 4th lv human cleric of Lathander. So far I am just playing him up as one who is there to help others in need, with a focus on help when concerning his friends.

Was curious as to what others may have done with this paticular class and diety. (or simular)

    Thanks

Most people pick Lathander to uphold the Sun Domain, perhaps dipping into the Master of Radiance PrC to aid their obliterating vampires and other horrendous undead.

The kind that helps others in need isn't played up too much, as most people typically defer to Ilmater for that sort of thing, but it's refreshing to see a non-Ilmater cleric being super altruistic.

If you're just looking for ideas and suggestions, I'd try really playing on the "sun" angle.

The sun has been worshiped and revered in the real world in one way or another for as long as we've had human civilization. Look beyond just the Lathander blurb for FR, and take some inspiration from the various sun-worship that religions throughout real-world history engaged in. The specific mythologies will not suit you, of course, but their ideas and practices might offer you great insight into playing a cleric of Lathander: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_worship

Remember that the sun is more than just a force that gives light and destroys undead. It's radiance makes crops grow, and feeds the people of the world. It's warmth chases away the winter cold, and feeds the great rivers of the world with freshly-melted snow. The sun's light reveals what hides in even the darkest shadows, and as such, your cleric might seek the truth in all things, seeking to expose the lies and deceit that others hide.

Lathander can definitely be one of the more interesting Gods to serve, if you're good with metaphors!

And don't forget his god-of-luvin' side...

His servants are probably pretty close to those of Chauntea, Sune, Sharess and Llira in terms of devotion to the beast with two backs:
The portfolios of Athletics, Birth, Self-perfection, Spring, Vitality and Youth all point to a good that's keen on fit people getting jiggy. And probably also means he has a stronger gay following than Kylie.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

Also remember that Lathander is the god of new beginnings, not necessarily completed projects. He's extremely popular with young people because he is basically the god of college students. "Yeah, I started that project like a week ago but then I found this other thing and it was waaay more interesting but then Jason had a thing so I went to that and I guess now I'm just having some downtime but I've been thinking..."

Lathander is a god of vitality and invention, what separates him from Oghma or the other gods of invention is that he finds more interest in the initial idea than the completed project.

The dawn is an extremely significant event, both in metaphor and the physical act, for Lathanderites. In times of extreme darkness (wars, attacks of monsters, illness, plague) they'll preach of a coming dawn, of better times in the future. They very much embody hope in dark times, perhaps the most of any God. The dawn of life (birth) is also their part, and hence they value children a little more than old blokes who are nearing dusk anyway.

They also tend to pray at dawn, and believe undead to be things of eternal night, Clerics of Lathander being joint with the Kelemvorites as the best undead-slayers in the lands.

Might want to look up rank names, as well (Awakened, Dawnspear, Light Carrier, Dawnbringer, Dawnlord, etc) and maybe see about your advancement through them as you level.

( Would be interesting if with the new updates, Clerics and Druids (not Favoured Souls due to the lack of divine servitude) were allowed to regain their spells outside of Rest areas at a certain hour each day )

Awesome to see a Cleric actually interested in RPing their devotion, by the by. Keep it up!
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

(Incidentally, be careful using Forgotten Realms Wiki as a source, since it also includes, sometimes prominently, 4th Ed stuff that isn't applicable in Sundren. Basically, anything including or following the Spellplague is disregardable. )

Very interesting to see everyone’s take on my post, alot of good info with the responses so far.

With this character i have no real interest so far in gold or worldly possessions, tho there are times when "better armor" is a necessity of the dnd mechanics.

It will be interesting to see how far i can take this build while trying to be modest in his possessions.

Now it seems with the RP choices i have chosen, there doesn’t seem to be a good Faction fit...as i understand things now...The Triumvirate seems to specific for my character, and Exigo Syndicate seems to wealth oriented.

Actually i read the factions before asking that...so maybe im too slow today...as a new player i can read what the general descriptions of the factions are...but it just leaves me wanting more info to make my decision easier...
(this also may become easier to choose in time, and im jumping the gun)

I prefer to learn a lot of the Sundren-specific lore in-game. It's perfect fuel for roleplay and meeting other PCs for the first time, and you can stop yourself from accidental metagaming if you know only as much as your character learns IG.

The Wardens (nature-faction) likely would have a place for Lathander. After all, you worship the sun and hate undead, close enough.
