  • Why No Arcane Trickster

Can anyone tell me why I cannot access Arcane Trickster?

I've just made Level 9. My relevant stats are: Male Human Rogue 3/Wizard 5 before leveling. I have Lore 8, need 7;Disable Device 11 need 7; Tumble 10 need 7; Spellcraft 16 need 4. I have the Sneak Attack +2D6 and can cast 2 Third Level spells.

When I try to level my character, Arcane Trickster is not available. In everything I've been able to read there is no minimum total level requirement. I seem to fulfill all the requirements and yet am not able to take a level in Arcane Trickster.
    Cheers,
    Dave

Those skill values, are they the effective ones or did you really put enough skillpoints into those skills?

DM_Cornuto: Sorry forgot that. I'm Chaotic Good (15/86).

Maevan2: They were read completely unequipped. And I'm Human so there should be no Racial bonuses or anything like that. Unless I'm getting a bonus from my stats that gets factored in. But except for Intelligence, +4, nothing else is more than +2. Will that blow the Lore level of 8?

What Maevan means is that you need the number of skill points without your stats bonuses. Which means that if you have 8 Lore with your Intelligence modifier, it puts you at 4 natural ranks in Lore, instead of the required 8.

What they said. All the skill requirements are what it shows at level-up...not what your character sheet shows. Try going to the level-up screen, choosing rogue or wizard, and see what it says there for your lore skill. It is probably 4 like MadSeer said.

You could try begging a DM to delevel you so you can take the skill ranks, but I doubt you will get your wish unless there is an actual problem with your character (skills dont work, didnt receive spells e.t.c.).

You can always take another rogue level, everyone needs skillpoints and you get uncanny dodge next level (Which is broken and completely useless)

It's not broken, people just don't understand how it works. It stops sneak attacks that are caused by flanking, only. If someone attacks from stealth or invisibility they bypass uncanny dodge.

e: Oh wait, I'm thinking of improved uncanny dodge.

Yeah, uncanny dodge is supposed to retain your dexterity bonus even when flat footed which is especially important for melee characters since most have a large amount of dodge bonus because it is the only AC that is stackable. For example a dwarven defender who gets caught flat footed looses a massive ten AC against the attacker (+1 dodge, +1 Dex, +4 Class, +4 Stance).

I wish obsidian would get round to fixing that. Its a real nightmare for high dex fighters and rogues.

Bedlam_X: That's it. Memory is slowly coming back. I remember reading about that problem when NWN2 first came out, now. Never run into it myself, though. The Lore level was 5, my Int is only +3 (IDRC).

Thief Of Navarre: Won't get the delevel, and no reason I should.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the help.

It isn't a problem per-se, it's just that your unmodified level for a skill needs to be at the level stated in the prereqs for the PrC.
                      I got one leg missin'
                      How do I get around?

The problem is/was that the unmodified skill is only available at level-up. You can't check it any other time.

Unequip gear giving skill bonuses then subtract the stat modifier from what shows up on the character sheet. Then you shall know all. Do not fear simple arithmetic; it is your friend.

racial bonuses, situational modifiers, skill feats... it can all get so confusing.

If you've levelled up a skill to the max, and it's a class skill, its base value will always be 4 + your level.
