  • The bottom line regarding vampires

I wanted to start a new thread so I can just go through some of the concerns people had and why you're seeing staff reactions as they are.

    1) Throughout the history of Sundren, there have always been some kind of drama regarding too many of X or Y, and X is overpowered etc

    2) This has never resulted in a hasteful change by the staff to a ruling

If there's maybe 40 unique people that play and 10 of them scream at the top of their lungs because I removed healing potions lets say, that is not justification enough to put them back in, it warrants a closer look.

In Sundren, vampires are part of the lore. It was never intended for there to be one or two vampires. There's a war brewing, in case people haven't noticed and things in the world are starting to change. That's beginning to be reflected ingame but so far the large majority of people I see content to sit and RP around the campfire most of the time.

That will change, but the outcome is still dependent on the players. I've read a lot of players seem convinced about what they can and can't do... and if that's how you feel then I have no idea why you would play here. In Sundren it's about freedom of action, your actions have consequences.

If the population of vampires bugs you, this is not a legitimate OOC concern in my eyes because while players can influence the server OOCly, this is not their decision to enforce. If vampires repeatedly attacking the same player or targeting low level players concerns you, that is a valid concern because it violates our rules. If this is something your character dislikes, then take action ingame, or don't complain at all. You have a solution, some of you just refute the validity while I've already seen others starting to get the idea.

Whether you're a low level or high level player there are avenues for you to explore to destroy the vampire threat, and in fact I encourage it. Factions in Sundren aren't designed for simply prestige, it's intended for there to be conflict (which is why we have no PvP penalties).

Make no mistake though that threats of leaving, insulting the intelligence of staffers etc is the best way to get absolutely shut out... It's the best way to get your thoughts and ideas rejected. None of us here have the patience for it, and we certainly don't have to tolerate it.

We're always willing to compromise things and I think everyone has been given their compromise. Nothing is ever set in stone. Let the DMs worry about the DM tasks and the players can focus on playing. If the environment isn't to your liking then there's always the freedom to play where you please.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

Sooooo...is it possible to get a list of what does and does not go for Sundren vamps as opposed to other canonical materials on the bloodsuckers? That would probably help get more people to know if they can or can not actually do anything about the threat besides just standing around posturing. Even a rogue could have some hope of surviving if certain things were known to work on the vamps here like they do in other stories/movies/shows.

I'd honestly prefer it if folk did some IC research into what can and can't off a vampire, be it In Game or In Journal.

Handing it over OOCly seems a little dull.
It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little - Do what you can.

When I met a vampire and fortunatelly had a garlic in the pocket, the guy playing the vampire accepted it immediatelly and did not feel well near to me. It worked .

My holy symbol is tatooed on my forehead. I think I can brandish it with great devotion, right into someones nose.

Basically, you just need to spend your nights swimming in a stream of running water in the Church of Chauntea's garlic plantation and you're safe.
Running across the mountains, attacking with an oversized scalpel, cometh Helga Great-Wyrm! And she gives a mighty bellow:
"Brace yourself, oh human speck of dust! You are made of meat and I am very hungry!"

Dwarven holy water is recommended, if only for it's superior flavor...

If vampires are getting to be a problem a simple undeath to death spell can fix the problem for you... and if its empowered it can take out 40+ hd's worth of undead. Any mid or high level wizard can cast it and its simply the best anti-undead spell in the game.

Or atleast it should work in Sundren, killing those pesky players with the undead sub-type.

Actually, I believe Undeath to Death was changed to no longer affect undead with more hit dice than your character.

Bleh, vampires shouldn't giggle in the face of a priest. With the paladins, those two classes are like the only reasons Vampires (and undead in general) should freak out. Undeath to Death should kick their butts.

                            I'm tryin, I'm tryin...

But the skill requirements mean either a multi-class or druid base...or wait until level 14 to take your first level (like I'm doing...but going waaayyyy slow at the moment).
