  • The Viridale Border Fort

So now that we have a world-map-accessable social area, I'd like everyone to try a bit harder at analyzing the non-social areas where folks tend to hang out. I'm still seeing a lot of people loitering in the Viridale Border Fort area. Yes, there are campfires there, but consider the area ICly please. It is a military fort. The campfires there should be used for staging your assaults on the forest, not for hanging out. The Legion would ask you to move along if you stayed there for other purposes. If you're IN the Legion, that's different, but you should also be enforcing this idea by ASKING PCs to move along.

Thanks everyone -- we'd hate to have to delete more campfires!

I was wondering if a alternative route around the fort might be considered. Feels awkward to have your evil character stroll through the legion outpost. Otherwise invisiblity potions work in a pinch.

I agree, and it's been identified in the past. It requires mapping resources to make that change, since new paths would have to be laid out and the current one to the world map would need closing, if the change were made. It's on the burner and may be getting some attention given the recent change with Pioneer's Way. That being said, I can't speak for whether it's a change they'll have time to make or not.

Asking people to move on should prove to be interesting.....

Don't get excessive, Kharn. People can stop and rest there. Chitchat is fine. Its when people linger there all day long that a problem occurs.

And the forest itself does have a two or three campfires in it as well that aren't in locations that are too awfully dangerous.

I agree with this, my character isn't even evil and it's a bit strange walking though a military fort...

To me it doesn't seem that odd; I've always viewed it as more of a checkpoint than some kind of stronghold.

Nah, it's pretty heavily-manned. They have arrow towers and underground bunkers, so it's more than a checkpoint.

There are multiple "Border" garrisons around viridale. This is just one of them.

The idea is that these guys keep Viridale in check. That being said...

As Phantom Lamb said, it's on our list of "We'd like this different". The viridale border was designed by a mapper pretty much around the time the server opened in 2007. It isn't exactly how it should be, but at the time, map demands were high and mappers were few Many areas have been redone since then to fit the design of Sundren Better. A few areas that have changed that people may not know ever were different: Gate of the Sunderer, Sharahan Hills, Port Avanthyr, the Crossroads. These all once were different areas.

More recently Maeven has taken time to redo areas. This area I'm sure will differ in the future, but we're focusing on many new areas right now, and going back over current areas isn't a top priority.

I suppose it might be reasonable to assume one could simply walk around the border encampments. Are there enough and in sight of each other to cover the whole Viridale border?

                        Edit: Further Thoughts on this:

I think people are under the mistaken impression that the Viridale Forest is somehow walled in. The forest is not caged. Its likely incredibly easy for a lone gnoll scout, or a small skirmish group to sneak out of the forest, but for what purpose? Cut off, all they could do, perhaps, would be to raid a nearby farm or waylay some travelers on the road before scampering off to get back to the forest. The only real impact they could have would be if the Mossclaw tried to mobilize an army, and that would easily get noticed by the border encampments.

I agree with that! How everyone treats the forts outposts is like a final fantasy game. You can stop and have some coffee with the guard while you wait for your train!

Im as guilty as any for doing this at the schild mountains campfire which is probably one of the most dangerous and stupid places to hang out.
