In Faerun, Merlin would have been a Wizard, not a Druid...

lol at worst merlin was a mythical person little facts and historical accounts exist on him. Most of what we have on king arthur ect was written hundreds of years later, a lot of it in french, during the time of king arthur was suppose to exist 5-6th century britain the dark ages there where no knights and certainly not in plate armour. The people who wrote the stories based most of their work on folklore and inclueded things from their own time like knights ect. And it was all heavily romantized. Farun is a make believe place, the druids and bards in faerun have some similarities to cletic druids and bards but they also have a lot of differences as well. Merlin most likely would be a rogue because if he existed at all he would of most likely had no magical powers but relied on trickery, superstition, and manipulation for his power. lol but as I said faerun is a make believe place you can say he could of been anything you liked and still be justified. Lol and bringing the lord of the rings into this, thats a totally different fantasy setting, this is faerun.

Faerun is a place where the gods are in everyday life right? So if you know your environment and in the rangers case this would be the wilderness wouldnt that bring you into acknowledging the powers of one/some or all of the nature dieties?
