  • Putting Barrigan in front of the firing squad

Alright guys, I had a conversation with someone a little while ago IC, and we discussed how the character Barrigan is apparently a little boring and hard to interact with....

I'd like feedback/thoughts/reactions from others who have seen and interacted with him, to help me flesh out the character more.
I'm looking for constructive criticism, no flaming please .

Boring? No more boring than the other do-gooders *snicker*

And I guess I'm only half joking when I say that. I have a tendency to believe that all Paladins or good Clerics act very similar. And I know this is bad, baaad stereotyping, but outwardly that's how they usually appear to me.

So I guess the only suggestion I can give is to somehow differentiate him from the next Paladin, in a way that you don't have to RP for hours to find that out. Give him a quirk. Or something that defines him. And I mean something other than his sense of duty or lawfulness.

    Hope I explained that alright.

I can't say much about him as I haven't interacted with him much. I did not even think he was a good guy..I thought he was a rogue or something.

Yeah! He's a Halfy, so he must be a rogue! I mean, it's hard to believe that anyone who's at the height of people's pockets won't take the opportunity to get a bit richer.

I never noticed him boring at all. In fact, stab or shoot the individual who claims you are boring, because they are more then likely boring themselves.

Well I havent interacted with him too much, but he seamed fines with me. Maybe a little too trusting of the wrong peoples but thats how you wanted to play him I think :P

*sneaks around and shaves all mohawks off* *darts back into the shadows and disappears*

Well I have merely noticed him hanging around some dubious characters hence my guess he was a rogue

He briefly went a little nuts after being betrayed, however he never broke his vows, he was just rude and erratic for a while, which attracted attention from some of the, shall we say, seedier characters. He isn't the normal smite-on-sight yargh!-the-infidels paladin....if you look at my sig, he's a paladin of a god dedicated to defense and protection, also, as some people have seen he worships Cyrrollalee as well, a goddess of family and community. He takes those ideals to their furthest extent, and tries to reach out to everyone, be they drow, tiefling, gnoll, goblin, etc. That was the aspect that confused and aggravated the person who said I was boring, and to be fair he did have something of a point. He suggested I would probably make a better cleric than paladin. I disagree, based on the limitations NWN2 has on class selection, domain selection, and leeway with certain classes.

P.S. Thanks for the comments, keep them coming.
P.P.S. I in no way am angry or aggravated with the person who thought the character was boring, just wanted to clear that up, so no bashing him please.

I don't find him boring, it is refreshing to see a paladin who isnt "paladin for saves" or "paladin for smiting". Great job there by the way.

My personal opinion is, if people can't guess your class after dealing with them, you might be doing something right

I havn't gotten much chance to interact with you're lil guy. I did get to implode him to save a victim of an assault gone wrong. So I can't really comment, but you shouldn't be over concerned about a character being boring.

I think if you're worried about it, find some exxagerated ways to assert his personality. That tends to be enjoyable and alot of RP can flow from it. Small doses of humor creates entertainment. And stereotypes are a GREAT way to introduce those small quirks of a character.

What do I mean about stereotypes? Take you character, think of a classic stereotype that might revolve around it, and instead of trying to be it, join it. Druids who overly protect nature might throw a fit if someone walked on a flower. Maybe there's no visible flowers, but I think people will allow you to invent one for the sake of RP Evil people who exxagerate their evil can be so entertaining to watch.

"Yes yes, I -am- quite amazing aren't I. My plans -always- succeed. Mwahahaha."

Their lackeys whispering behind their backs the entire time, chuckling and such.

Even completely serious characters can add a bit of flavor. I'm reminded of a player from my last server who played an inquisitor. He was always serious, never laughed, etc. Everyone around him couldn't help but laugh. He had a list of trials for testing if someone was a heretic, for example:

                          Trial by Stone

Tie a heavy rock around the neck of the suspected which represents their sins. If they float then god believes them innocent as god would never let the sins of a innocent man weigh him down. If he dies, then he will go with god and be forgiven.

They ended up methods that always resulted in the death of those tried, but the methods were comedic. Some with blessed dagger plunging them into the heart, and such.

So, summarizing, try to find ways to assert your quirks and personality.

While this did work with the real world, Deities of Faerun are a little less vague when it comes to such things. A paladin should lose all abilities for killing someone in either of these ways.
