I find that one of my characters is distastefully above the "xp curve" simply because I use the ooc tool to find players and theres usually only more than "a single player" in "adventure areas" "Grind zones" and so on.

So, in order to find someone to interact with, I hafta cut my way through to 'em, or harass some poor guy who is really just trying to be alone.

Grinders are going to grind no matter how much you post in the forum about the "how-to's" of RP. And hells yes! Hit them with that big stick!

But, that wasn't even what all this was about. It wasn't "grinding sucks", but "If you don't RP like this, then you aren't really a roleplayer". THAT is what I hate. THAT is what makes the server look like a bunch of RP snobs that grief newbies or those who don't quite get the concept of RP. I didn't think that was the image Sundren wanted, but I am new so what do I know? Except maybe the way a new player would see things...
      Point taken.

I still feel if you walk up to someone and go:

      "I'm bob, want to grind?"

You're a bad RP'er , or at least in that situation you are. If that makes me snobby and an elitist then I guess I'm a snobby elitist. Can someone whose done that really say to me "That's as good as I can do GBX you asshole!" I don't think so. While it might seem like I'm telling people to RP, is asking people to say more than that really telling people how to RP their characters? I don't think so.

I mean, you gotta flip the viewpoint on it too. If people are always allowed to do it and assume it's completely okay with it, and we just roll our eyes and say nothing, what is going to drag people away from that? Somewhere down the line some RP is going to wind up How-to'd and some things just won't be allowed.

Look at the character submission forums as an example. Some people have very well written backstories that are enjoyable to read, but sometimes they cross over dimensions of what's allowed, so we got to tell them "Sorry, this character can't be approved."

I guess I don't see how me saying it's half-assed to say "I'm bob, want to grind?" makes Sundren look so horrible.

It's "wanna", everyone knows grinders use improper grammar.

I mean, think of it as signing up to play football, going out on the field. And standing there...

          ... and you stand there...

Now, I can be politically correct and go "Maybe that person has a disability that doesn't allow them to move, we'll just play with them there and work them into the game as best as possible." Or you can simply ask "Why are you trying to play football if you can't move?"

That's how I look at it.

"I'm bob, wanna grind?" <-- this is standing there

Well, another reply, the thing I am most curious about here is... "Why?"

This is a roleplaying server right? If you believe someone is such a horrible roleplayer that you would rather not play on the same server as them... The easiest solution is to do what I do, avoid the said character and wait for others to notice the lack of roleplay, or bad roleplay done by this person. The server always has a healthy number of players from what I have seen, and since it is not listed under social, theres a good chance most of them are not in inn rooms.

What I am more suprised no one has mentioned is the fact it is so hard to find people that aren't in adventure zones. I'm here to roleplay, but some people are here to level, and that's fine by me, there are adventurers, this is how the characters make their living, but how come its only grinding if they don't invite you along? What if I were to say I think it's grinding if they do not spend a certain ammount of time in a place with little to no hostiles? Not killing, not looting, simply roleplaying. Would this be antisocial behavior? Bad roleplay since both my characters are "adventurers"?

People complain about grinding when they, themselves are in "grinding zones" power looting when they themselves are there for loot and so on. I would love to be able to make a commoner, or a merchant, without the need to kill goblins just to talk to people. Next of you to think of someone as a grinder, think of which areas you spend which % of your time in.

Then again, this is just the opinion of a (role)player.

I'm just saying, ya gotta remember that new people are going to be reading all this, and it doesn't make us look very good. And it isn't exactly going to make people go "They're right! I suck at RP! Thank the gods they pointed it out in such a harsh manner or I would never have known!"

I wasn't being sarcastic. It seriously will not make anyone say that they are the ones that suck at RP or suddenly realize that they do.

If you look at my above post, you will see that I believe the best way to deal with those who don't seem to want to roleplay is to ignore them, if everyone ignores them, and they're smart, they will realize that people think they cant roleplay. The best thing anyone can do is be honest, not necessarily blunt, but honest. Positive reinforcement seems to do wonders with many newer roleplayers. However, pointing out someones faults, even minor, can make them cry... Literally... As funny as it sounds, you still feel bad for making them cry.

Though this is getting a little off topic to be honest, this is about "grouping" and "not grouping"... What you have to remember is if you are around people you don't know, you should not trust them with your life unless they prove themselves to actually be willing to risk theirs for yours. Exceptions of course should be made for characters with their own sets of morals and such, but generally, consider your actions when you want in a group. Should they trust you? Do they know you arent a follower of Cyric just waiting for them to be weak so you can finish them off?

It's mostly cuz people aren't bad roleplayers. They just get lazy alot of times. It's like watching someone go "I could roleplay but... I don't feel like it." and people around them are trying hard.

And I speak out about people being in grind zones all day all the time. For many reasons.

                      1) Clean up doesn't happen until a zone is empty.
                      2) Give other people a chance at the dungeon
                      3) Most events don't start while you're Adventuring already
                      4) Makes you seem like levelling is all you care about because people don't catch you elsewhere.
                      5) You make people feel you're going to level up faster than them and they have to compete if they want to "Keep Up".

The list could go on. I understand Obsidian made zoning through certain areas crash alot which is why I don't get ill with it. Sometimes people are just kicking back too, like at the camp for Sharahan.

Most the server are adventurers really. I don't got beef with people being adventurers. I even said I don't got a problem with people trying to get Exp or running dungeons. You can't really powerlevel (You can farm, but less likely). It's just I expect people to act out that profession too.

I dunno, maybe I'm just too high of standards. Seems alot of people think my viewpoint is off.

I'm just saying, ya gotta remember that new people are going to be reading all this, and it doesn't make us look very good. They should be thanking me ^_^

But seriously, you gotta remember the tone in which the thread started off too. If people already bothered to read the remarks at the beginning, they'd see why my replies ended up harsh. I'm pretty civil in most threads, but I get harsh when people get foolish. And pointing a finger at someone going "Have fun grinder!" when you pulled the "I'm bob, want to grind?" introduction will get me harsh. It's just... just... mean.

I think we actually have the same view of things, just a very different way of going about it. I understand where you are coming from, though, and can get my hackles up about it just as much. Doesn't make either of us wrong or right, and I apologize if I was a bit over-board.

As far as getting in to groups: IMHO, just let the players do it how they want to do it. If you think the PCs need to get to know each other before you let them in your group then do it that way. And if people are cool with the whole three line pair up then let them do that as long as it is not with you. Encourage RP by all means and as much as possible, but don't assume that people are lazy or just suck at RP cause they don't do that. Some of them just don't know.

For the ones that are lazy, though...Not much to do about them. Insulting will not work, and you can't force them to RP. The best way is likely to just not play with them. *shrugs*

I did actually mention this as the best way to deal with those who will not roleplay. Eventually if everyone ignores them they will either leave (whoopie, they didn't want to roleplay anyways) or make a character and roleplay with people.

You know... I hate to admit it, but I'm a dirty grinder. I love role-playing and all but some days I can't sleep or I wake up or something and what I really wanna do is kill goblins for a little while. xD I'll role-play with anyone who shows up and usually do a fair job of it... But I'm not really going to go looking for someone. I'd rather do my brainless drooling on the server 'cause, well. Arienna's a lowbie and needs more than just xpies - gold and equipment and stuff.

If it's totally not cool I can, like. Reestablish my WOW account or something, but. ^_~
