  • Spells: summons and alignments

So, not a recent (First ed.) PnP player.

Can some one tell me what the alignments on certain spells are for... Abyssal Might for example.

Are the "Fiendish" summoned creatures obvious? If so they fall into the same law as animating dead.

Should members of the Hands be arresting/warrning people who cast these spells in front of them or what?

Yes. Summoning any "evil" or scary monster where they shouldn't be would be something a Hand of Mundus would challenge. Be careful to stick to your jurisdiction though. If you start demanding in the middle of the Mossdale that someone come along quietly, don't be surprised if they murder you to death

But what about evil aligned spells?

        Regarding summons:

Spellcraft can identify if a spell is evil or not.

Knowledge: Planar could identify if a summoned critter is evil or not, but otherwise, you wouldn't know if what you're looking at is "fiendish." Remember, the name tag over its head doesn't exist! As a rule of thumb, I think DC 15 + creature CR let's you identify the outsider being summoned. If you don't know the creature, you don't know if it is good or evil.

The Hands know that neutral people can summon both good and evil creatures. However, in the game, there's been no "recent shift" in how the summon spells work. To them, people have always summoned these celestial and fiendish creatures. Yes, they say summoning evil outsiders is against the law. That's always been in place. However, they wouldn't do any special pushes for it, because that summoning isn't any more common now than it was before.

So if a Hand/Legionaire/Redblade, etc identifies an evil aligned spell, do they have any legal duty to arrest the caster or is the caster the recipient of a raised eyebrow and watch-full eye in the future?

Evil magic is illegal, but like jaywalking, it may not get you more than just a warning. It depends on the severity. I can't give you any steadfast rules--that's for your character to decide.

So if it's an orc or tiefling get 'em before they can shout "Police brutality!"

Yeah, or an elf, you can murder them on sight.

You'll never get Maine. She'll run faster than the Flash after he popped speed.

About the law though. One thing people should be aware of is that, like the real world, just because you commit a crime doesn't mean the hands are in every bush waiting to hop out and grab you, then curb stomp you. And just like real cops, sometimes people just might not do shit about it. Law enforcement are people, even NPCs that DMs control. They aren't robotic golems. They are prone to mistakes, emotion, etc.
